Associate Professor/Full Professor
Chief of Research, Division of General Internal Medicine
The Division of General Internal Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine is seeking a visionary academic investigator (MD, PhD, or MD-PhD) to serve as inaugural Chief of Research — a role shaping the scientific identity of one of the School's fastest-growing and largest divisions.
This is a unique opportunity to build a research enterprise from a position of strength: a newly consolidated Division spanning primary care, hospital medicine, geriatrics, and research with institutional commitment to growth. The Chief of Research will set strategic direction for the Division's research portfolio — expanding programs, recruiting talent, growing funded awards, and cultivating the next generation of physician-scientists through faculty development and trainee mentorship. This work is anchored within a School of Medicine ranked No. 2 nationally in NIH funding, offering unmatched access to institutional infrastructure and a deep culture of research excellence.
We are particularly interested in funded investigators in health services research, clinical informatics, implementation science, and general medicine clinical research, with opportunities for cross-institutional collaboration. The role also carries broader opportunities including building research infrastructure across the Division's inpatient and outpatient programs, pioneering new capacity for community-engaged research, and implementing general medicine research training programs.
This position offers scope to build interdisciplinary programs from the ground up, elevate the academic stature of general internal medicine within the School of Medicine, and directly shape the field's future. The Division backs this vision with resources for faculty recruitment and development.
The successful candidate will be an accomplished investigator with a strong record of leadership, extramural funding, scholarship, and mentorship. Candidates should hold an M.D. and/or Ph.D. and have training in health services research, decision sciences, epidemiology, research ethics, informatics, or other areas relevant to our broad research mission. The ideal candidate will bring a demonstrated commitment to advancing the educational and scholarly missions of general internal medicine. Experience in academic leadership, scholarship, funded research, and education is preferred.
The search committee will begin reviewing candidates immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Applications should include a detailed CV and a letter of interest that highlights the applicant’s personal vision and relevant leadership experience. To ensure full consideration, inquiries, nominations, and applications should be submitted electronically in confidence, to:
