Integrated Program for Anesthesiology Specialists

The Integrated Program for Anesthesiology Specialists (IPAS) in the Department of Anesthesiology offers academically accomplished anesthesiologists an opportunity to share advanced clinical skills and unique experiences at one of the most successful and innovative anesthesiology programs in the U.S. This initiative fosters teaching opportunities, clinical growth, and academic advancement by bringing in outstanding talent to help advance the missions of the department. 

IPAS participants serve as departmental faculty, practicing clinically at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Key responsibilities include teaching and supervising trainees across a diverse patient care environment. Faculty balance clinical care with protected time for academic pursuits, including education, quality improvement, and research. They also contribute to the department’s educational programs through lectures, clinical conferences, journal clubs, and clinical simulation cases.

WashU Medicine’s Department of Anesthesiology has a rich history of excellence across patient care, education, and research. Serving a large tertiary care clinical practice, WashU Medicine treats complex patients across all specialties. The department actively advances anesthesiology and perioperative outcomes through meaningful discovery, consistently ranking among the top three anesthesiology departments in funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Qualifications for this program include:

  • At least 4+ years of training in clinical anesthesiology
  • Board certification in anesthesiology in the applicant's home country
  • Evidence of involvement in research, academic projects, quality improvement, or educational initiatives
  • Advanced or unique clinical experience that enhances the missions of the department
  • USMLEs desired but not required
