Medical Director of Infection Prevention at the St. Louis VA

The Division of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis (WashU Medicine) seeks a full-time faculty member (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Full Professor of Medicine) to serve as the Medical Director of Infection Prevention at the St. Louis VA. The successful candidate will practice predominantly at the St. Louis VA Medical Center (90%). The applicant will also be expected to have at least a half-day clinic per week. The remaining effort will be spent teaching, conducting research, or engaging in patient care at Washington University. 

WashU Medicine is nationally recognized for its leadership in infection prevention and healthcare epidemiology, with a long-standing commitment to training the next generation of leaders in infectious diseases. The ID division is routinely recognized as an international leader in research funding. 

The VA St Louis Health Care System provides a wide range of health, support, and facility services for Veterans across the John J. Cochran Veterans Hospital in midtown St. Louis, the St. Louis VA Medical Center-Jefferson Barracks. The VA also offers attractive benefits, including premium health insurance and a robust pension program. The St. Louis VA also has the infrastructure for QI projects through chief residents and research opportunities that are independent of the NIH.

Role Overview

The successful candidate will be a dynamic individual and join a collegial faculty with diverse interests in infectious diseases. The position will include protected time and a title as the medical director of infection prevention at the St. Louis VA. The candidate will have the opportunity to practice ID clinically or engage in research at Barnes-Jewish Hospital or other BJC hospitals, depending on clinical interests. 

This role affords substantial opportunities for teaching medical students, residents, and fellows on both the inpatient medicine and infectious diseases consult services.  

Clinical responsibilities include:  

  • Supervise inpatient consultative infectious diseases services at the St. Louis VA 
  • Supervise medicine teaching services at the St. Louis VA 
  • Deliver outpatient infectious diseases care at the St. Louis VA 
  • Provide inpatient or outpatient infectious diseases care within Barnes-Jewish Hospital or another BJC facility 
  • Educational Responsibilities 
  • Teach and mentor residents, fellows, and medical students 
  • Participate in didactic conferences and educational initiatives 
  • Opportunities to develop educational scholarship and leadership within the clinician-educator track 

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Serve as the Medical Director of Infection Prevention at the St. Louis VA

  • MD, MD/PhD, DO or equivalent
  • Board certification or eligibility in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases
  • Possession or eligibility to obtain a State of Missouri Medical License
