Heart & Lung Procurement Surgeon

Washington University School of Medicine in Saint Louis & Barnes-Jewish Hospital is seeking a Heart and Lung Procurement Surgeon to support its expanding thoracic transplant and donor recovery program. The selected candidate will perform surgical recovery of donor thoracic organs, including heart, lungs, and heart–lung blocks, and collaborate with transplant teams and organ procurement organizations to ensure optimal organ preservation and successful transplantation outcomes.

This position will commensurate as Instructor/ Assistant Professor level in Department of Surgery, depending on the entry level and offers an opportunity to work within a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary transplant environment while contributing directly to life-saving organ transplantation.

Responsibilities

  • Perform surgical procurement of donor hearts and lungs for transplantation.
  • Conduct donor organ assessment, including intraoperative evaluation of thoracic organs.
  • Manage organ preservation, packaging, and transport according to transplant protocols.
  • Participate in procurement travel to regional donor hospitals as required.
  • Work closely with Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs), transplant coordinators, and cardiothoracic surgical teams.
  • Assist with documentation and regulatory compliance for transplant programs.
  • Participate in on-call coverage for thoracic organ recovery.
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and transplant program development.

Required

  • MD or DO (or international equivalent).
  • Completion of accredited cardiothoracic surgery training.
  • Board-certified or board-eligible in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
  • Eligible for state medical licensure in Missouri.
  • Ability to travel for donor procurement procedures.

Our multidisciplinary transplant team performs annually about 70 heart transplantation, 80 lung transplantation, and is committed to clinical excellence, innovation, and research.

We do donation after circulatory death (DCD) heart  procurements, normothermic regional perfusion, as well as cold continuous machine perfusion.
