CARDIOLOGY Clinical Chief of Cardiology, Division of Cardiology, Washington University School of Medicine
Core responsibilities include clinical strategic planning, program development, operational oversight, integration of care delivery, and ensuring clinical excellence in alignment with the Division’s educational and research missions. The Clinical Chief will work closely with the Division Chief and Cardiology Section Heads, and Department of Medicine, School of Medicine’s Faculty Practice Plan (FPP), BJH and BJC HealthCare leaders. The candidate will oversee Cardiology Medical Directors based at BJH, BJWC, the Heart Care Institute and all Wash U Cardiology practice sites. The Clinical Chief will collaborate with other WashU Medicine Divisions and Departments, the FPP, BJC HealthCare, and community partners to optimize clinical growth and excellent multidisciplinary care.
The Clinical Chief of Cardiology should be an experienced, outstanding practicing clinical cardiologist with operational and administrative experience establishing and growing clinical practices, overseeing clinical operations, improving quality and safety, leading physicians and working closely with hospitals to advance cardiovascular care. The candidate must have an active medical license, board certification in cardiology, and be eligible for medical licensure in Missouri and Illinois. Successful candidates will be expected to continue to practice clinically and be provided significant administrative time for the Clinical Chief role. Key Responsibilities:
- Clinical operations of the Division of Cardiology. Develop strategic growth plans and provide oversight for implementation of growth plans and inpatient and outpatient clinical operations. Optimize clinical operations, market share, clinical excellence and patient experience. Assure divisional compliance with all applicable laws and regulatory requirements including CMS, TJC, and the Missouri Department of Health.
- Serve as the primary liaison between the Cardiology division, WashU FPP leadership, and BJH/BJC HealthCare leadership to optimize quality and safety metrics in partnership with Cardiothoracic (CT) and Vascular surgery, Nursing, and Medical Directors.
- Set goals and implement initiatives to attain excellence in clinical outcomes, quality of care and patient experience to advance the Division’s regional and national prominence.
- In collaboration with the Chief of Cardiology, recruit and retain high-quality clinical faculty to address WashU/BJC system-wide cardiology growth plans and patient care needs.
- Oversee inpatient and outpatient cardiology services, throughput, and operations at all sites in collaboration with appropriate physician, nursing, and administrative leaders.
- Optimize clinic scheduling, physician and advanced practice provider productivity, template design, room utilization, referral standards, subspecialty triage, to maintain patient access and efficient patient care.
- Develop collaborative clinical programs encompassing cardiology subspecialties and partner disciplines (e.g., cardiac surgery, vascular surgery, radiology, maternal-fetal medicine, oncology, genetics, etc.).
- Collaborate with the Division Chief to develop short- and long-term clinical strategic plans. Assure adequate administrative and patient care infrastructure to support clinical endeavors.
- Maintain clear lines of communication; lead multidisciplinary administrative meetings to optimize patient care, patient experience and provider satisfaction.
- Oversee quality programs and quality director roles in the Division, including Quality Management meetings, and the distribution of meaningful use and quality metrics
- Establish an operating structure and processes that will advance and optimize efficiency and quality of care delivery so that it meets or surpasses national benchmarks (e.g., mortality, complications, remissions, outcomes, patient satisfaction and experience, etc.)
- Evaluate, document, and enhance the effectiveness of cardiovascular quality management programs across the WashU/BJH. Define and track metrics for access, experience, quality/safety (e.g., median new-patient wait days, on-time starts, LOS, readmissions, CG-CAHPS, etc).
- Lead Cardiology performance and operational improvement programs to assure key milestones and indicators are within targets and participate in interdisciplinary improvement initiatives.
