Assistant Professor

Research Faculty (Full-Time), Tracy Family SILQ Center

The Tracy Family SILQ Center at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis is seeking an exceptional PhD, MD, or MD/PhD faculty candidate with experience in management and from the fields of aging, neuroscience, or neurodegenerative diseases to lead and run a vibrant center of faculty doing world-leading research on fundamental processes of brain aging, the pathophysiology of neurodegeneration, and the development of novel tests and treatments. 

The position is for a research track faculty appointment at a rank commensurate with academic experience and qualifications.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Develop and implement the center's strategic plan in collaboration with faculty and university leadership.
  • Oversee the Center’s operations, including budget planning, monitoring external and internal funding sources and recharge center management to ensure alignment with university guidelines, sponsor regulations, and best practices in research administration.
  • Oversee staff recruitment, performance evaluation, and professional development.
  • Collaborate with and mentor junior faculty members and researchers to facilitate Center research activities and projects and determine effective resource utilization.
  • Establish and maintain impactful partnerships with university departments, industry, government agencies, and external research organizations to foster collaborative research and funding opportunities.
  • With the Director and Co-Director, lead proposal development and fundraising efforts to support the Center's activities.
  • Contribute to manuscripts arising from Center-supported research initiatives.
  • Prepare regular reports and presentations for the Center Executive Leadership Committee, The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital, and scientific and lay audiences.
  • Coordinate, facilitate, and implement interdisciplinary collaborations across university departments, schools, and external partners to advance the Center’s mission.
  • Establish and oversee metrics for evaluating the Center’s performance and impact to guide decision-making and strategic planning.
  • Oversee the Center’s infrastructure, including research equipment, IT systems, and other essential resources, to ensure operations and research support.
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel 1-2 times per year to attend key conferences, meetings or workshops, with potential international travel durations of up to one week per trip.

MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Doctorate in Science, Medicine, or related field with at least 2 years of lead or supervisory experience included (post-doctoral experience equivalent)

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: 


Greater than 7 years’ experience in research and management.  A PhD, MD or related scientific/medical degree is required

  • Strong expertise in writing scientific, medical and regulatory documents with a deep understanding of scientific hypothesis generation, experimental testing, analysis of data, formulating and publishing result
  • Strong leadership and management skills with demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Outstanding leadership and Executive function, independently leading expert teams to success
  • Experience with grant applications and management
  • Ability to work closely and constructively with interdisciplinary teams and foster good working relationships with team and sites.

  • Excellent ability to communicate effectively (written and oral)
  • Excellent ability to manage time, multi-task, and effectively prioritize projects to meet timelines
  • Strong work ethic
  • Highly self-motivated, goal oriented, and effective with minimal supervision
  • Ability to use independent thought, judgment and creativity to formulate and implement effective solutions to complex problems
  • 5+ years management experience, preferable of large complex teams/projects
  • Proven commitment to leadership, management, and team development
  • Proven effective leadership as evidenced by experience leading large, multidisciplinary teams and managing complex projects
  • Experience in clinical or laboratory research protocol development, management, and implementation
  • Experience in performance management, including conflict resolution, performance improvement plans and fostering positive workforce development
  • Experience in managing large-scale budgets ($2,000,000+), including allocation and monitoring
  • Experience in research or grants administration is a plus
  • Proven effective strategic planning and leadership skills
  • Experience in managing core research centers or similar operational entities
  • Comprehensive oversight of research operations, including labs, recharge centers, and personnel
  • Experience in grant writing and the preparation of proposals, including budgets, budget justifications, specific aims, and research methodology.
  • Proven problem-solving skills in operational, strategic, workforce and research contexts
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and make decisions with minimal supervision.
