#1011088 Medical Director, Pediatric Sleep Medicine - Pediatrics Allergy and Pulmonary Medicine

Washington University in St. Louis seeks a specialty board-eligible or -certified faculty member (rank commensurate with experience) to serve as Medical Director, Pediatric Sleep Medicine.  WashU’s pediatric sleep medicine program is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and currently provides clinical services at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Missouri Baptist Medical Center, including presently 12 beds for pediatric polysomnography.  The Sleep Center is expanding to meet the increased need for sleep studies in patients ranging from newborns to older adolescents. When this planned expansion is completed, a total of 16 polysomnography rooms will be available across our region. The Medical Director will join three pediatric sleep medicine specialists supporting the clinical service.

In recent years the Sleep Center has averaged between 1,200 and 1,500 studies annually. Its added capacity is projected to bring that total closer to 2,500.  The Center’s sleep rooms also feature advanced sleep study equipment that allows both polysomnography and full electroencephalogram (EEG) be conducted at the same time when indicated. The Sleep Center also has equipment to perform up to 4 studies at the inpatient bedside to meet the needs of medically complex children and adolescents.

For candidates who are dual board-eligible or -certified in Pediatric Pulmonology, clinical services may also include responsibilities as a specialist in pediatric pulmonology. The Medical Director will have an opportunity to teach trainees, including pediatric sleep fellows, residents, and medical students, and participate in research and/or other scholarly activities.

The Division of Allergy & Pulmonary Medicine division’s strong commitment to excellence in patient care, teaching and investigation has consistently been recognized as one of America’s best pulmonary services in surveys by CHILD magazine and Parent magazine, as well as the U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings. The division supports an active clinical practice; faculty and nurse practitioners see over 10,000 outpatient visits at five care locations with approximately one quarter of these visits being new patient referrals and out-patient consultations. In-patient clinical volumes and consultations at St. Louis Children’s Hospital are typically over 7,000 patient-days per year.

Our faculty are nationally prominent, both through publishing manuscripts in high impact journals and through leadership in national societies, academies and foundations. The division has a core of innovative basic, translational and clinical investigators working on both investigator-initiated studies and through multicenter collaborative research networks to further our understanding and treatment of childhood lung diseases and asthma.
