Department of Neuroscience Fellow to Faculty Program

The Department of Neuroscience Fellow to Faculty Program at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis rewards outstanding early career* researchers in neuroscience with the opportunity to create an independent research agenda in anticipation of joining the Department of Neuroscience as an Assistant Professor on the tenure track. The program consists of a Fellow phase of one to five years depending on experience, with promotion to an Assistant Professor position following successful completion of the fellowship. During the first phase, which can take place in any research lab within the Department of Neuroscience, Fellows will have the freedom to build their independent research program with guidance and support from their faculty mentor and a mentoring team, as well as a generous research and professional development support package. After successfully completing the mentored phase, the Fellow will be eligible for an Assistant Professor position (tenure track) in the Department of Neuroscience with independent lab space, a competitive start-up package, salary support, and protected time for research. Transition to the Assistant Professor position will be subject to the normal faculty appointment processes at WashU.  At the Assistant Professor level, faculty are expected to establish an independent laboratory, develop collaborations, supervise students and personnel, pursue external funding and publish and present their research to facilitate their success as independent scientists. We expect this program to identify exceptionally talented scientists early in their career and provide those individuals with the resources needed to pursue major questions in neuroscience.

*We recognize that researchers progress at varying rates. As such, the Fellow stage timeframe is flexible, and we may consider onboarding a candidate with appropriate qualifications up to 10 years post-PhD or promoting to Assistant Professor on an expedited timeline.
