The Department of Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine invites applications and nominations for the position of Division Chief of Bone and Mineral Diseases. Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Medicine, the Chief will oversee all research, clinical, educational, administrative, and financial functions including research operations, clinical operations, educational programs, faculty recruitment, faculty development, new program growth and support of scholarship and research in the Division.

 

Established in 1975, the Division of Bone and Mineral Diseases, Department of Medicine, Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine is the only academic division in the United States entirely focused on musculoskeletal disorders, with a 40+ year history of excellence in research, education, and patient care.

 

The research interests of Division investigators focus on core bone biology, including osteoblast and osteoclast biology, and cell signaling and cell-cell communication. Investigators also focus on broad-based, interdisciplinary projects, such as inflammatory bone diseases, cell-cell interactions in the bone marrow microenvironment, bone marrow fat and neural regulation of bone remodeling, bone and energy metabolism, tumor-bone interactions, bone infections, and discovery of novel genes involved in musculoskeletal disorders and skeletal responses to pharmacological agents.

 

Clinical faculty in the Division provide high quality care to patients at three locations: the Center for Advanced Medicine (CAM) in the Central West End, Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital, and the CAM – South County. Although osteoporosis is the main focus of the clinical program, clinicians offer expert consultations for all metabolic bone disorders, including Paget’s disease of bone, disorders of calcium and phosphorus homeostasis, and inherited disorders, such as osteogenesis imperfecta, hypophosphatasia, high bone mass phenotypes, and skeletal dysplasias. A new adult rare bone disease clinic was established in 2021.

 

The successful candidate will be a visionary and strategic academic leader with a substantial record of leadership, research productivity, clinical and administrative accomplishments, and teaching experience. We are seeking a diverse pool of applicants with prior research, clinical, administrative, and leadership experience gained within a Department of Medicine, strong interpersonal and collaborative skills and demonstrated ability to effectively inspire, manage, mentor and develop faculty, trainees, and staff.

Qualified candidates should hold an MD, MD/PhD, PhD, DO or equivalent degree and should be at or above the Associate Professor rank. MD and MD/PhD candidates should hold ABIM certification in Internal Medicine or the equivalent training and certification. We are seeking candidates with operational/administrative leadership experience in an academic medical center or integrated health system.

Experience developing a vision and providing strategic direction with an excellent record of research, clinical care, teaching, and scholarship.

Established, ongoing, and independent research portfolio.

Prior experience navigating program growth/expansion.

Demonstrated background promoting efficient clinical operations, and establishing metrics to measure and improve patient satisfaction, safety, quality, and outcomes.

Adept at supporting trainees and faculty in scholarship, research, teaching, clinical and administrative activities.

Skills and experience working collaboratively with diverse groups of faculty, trainees, and staff.

Demonstrated administrative skills including proactive communication and strategic/operational planning.

Leadership style that supports collegiality, collaboration, and respect for diverse views.

High level of personal integrity and professionalism in all interactions.

Confidence in decision-making and capacity to identify, manage, and confront challenges using both cooperation and assertiveness to seek advantageous solutions for all parties.

Excellent written and oral communication and listening skills.
