Medical Director of Adult Outpatient Psychiatry

Overview

The Medical Director of Adult Outpatient Psychiatry directs and coordinates adult outpatient clinical operations and services located in the Taylor Avenue Building (clinic) to ensure seamless integration of clinical activities through planning, developing, organizing and implementing medical services and management systems that support the successful operations and promote the fiscal integrity of the clinic.

The position reports directly to the Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs and has oversight of the clinical providers including physicians, nurses, advanced practice providers, psychologists and social workers.

Key roles and responsibilities: 

  • Mentor, supervise and provide ongoing and focused professional practice evaluations of clinical outpatient faculty and staff providers, including interdisciplinary team members.
  • Track and assess clinical productivity of all providers.
  • Responsible for hiring and oversight of faculty and staff providers; advises the Vice Chair and Director of Clinical Operations on clinical staffing needs, including physicians, APPs, psychologists, social workers and trainees, and work with leadership on recruitment efforts.
  • Oversees the clinic’s clinical quality assurance programs.
  • Develops and administers clinical practice policies and procedures.
  • Oversee the allocation and scheduling of clinical assignments.
  • Coordinates services between divisional clinical sections and clinical services with other departments.
  • Interact with director of acute psychiatry to ensure a seamless continuity between acute and outpatient services.
  • In partnership with the Executive Director, oversees the development of the operating (including projections of revenues and expenses) and capital budgets for the clinic; assures sound financial management, including overseeing financial, accounting and budgetary reports.
  • Develop strategies for growing adult outpatient psychiatric services, creating innovative programs to provide high-quality and equitable care within the clinic and other locations in coordination with the School of Medicine’s clinical partner, BJC healthcare.
  • Working with Vice Chair of Education, ensure that outpatient clinical programs are conducive to residency and medical student education.
  • Keep the Vice Chair informed on issues, concerns and problems arising from the day-to-day practice of physician services and development of plans for improving physician and patient satisfaction levels.
    • Work with Wash U and Barnes-Jewish Hospital patient compliance offices
    • Review and address patient safety issues.
    • Review and manage risk management issues.
    • Oversee physician and staff credentialing.

Qualified candidates will possess a MD, MD/PhD, or DO degree and hold or be eligible for an unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Missouri.  Candidates should be certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) in Psychiatry and have at least five years of demonstrated success in providing oversight to adult outpatient clinic operations.
