Associate Division Chief of Anesthesiology – General Division (BJH South)

The Department of Anesthesiology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis (WUSM) is seeking qualified applications for an exciting and critically important leadership role within the department. The Associate Division Chief will work in the operating rooms of Barnes Jewish Hospital (BJH), a leader in clinical innovation and research. BJH is a tertiary trauma hospital serving St. Louis and surrounding areas. The general division includes operating and non-operating rooms with ~42k cases per annum.

 The work within the Division is inclusive of a wide and complex variety of surgical specialties including Orthopedics, Oncology, Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Spine, Neuro Spine, ENT, Gynecology, Minimally Invasive Surgery, Robotic Surgery, Urology, Ophthalmology, Gastroenterology, Remote Anesthesia, Plastics, Transplant and Trauma.

 The General Division leadership works closely with hospital, nursing and surgery leaders in a variety of collaborative functions which include Strategic Growth Planning, Quality and Safety (Peer Review), Opioid Stewardship, Procedural Sedation, Pharmacy Operations, Critical Care, COVID Operations and Perioperative Efficiency.

Professional development responsibilities / opportunities

-       Oversee the professional development of faculty, CRNAs, trainees, and anesthesiology technicians within the General Division

-       Support clinical operations, safety, and quality improvement within the General Division, including investment in faculty and CRNA career development.

-       Actively promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the General Division

-       Annual evaluation of General Division faculty

-       Grow as an institutional leader within WUDA and WUSM

 

Leadership responsibilities / opportunities

-       Grow as a servant leader who is able to nurture and advance the careers of others

-       Acquire the necessary familiarity with division clinical operations to support the Division Chief of General Anesthesiology, BJH

-       Work with the scheduling teams on daily staffing needs at BJH

-       Assist with the preparation of annual General Division budget/financial plan

-       Provide leadership to General Division program development and growth

-       Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as a culture that is respectful and nurturing to all

 

Research responsibilities / opportunities

-       Promote a climate of vibrant clinical and translational research within the Division

-       Provide mentorship to clinician scientists pursuing clinical and translational research

-       Lead your own clinical / translational research program

 

Education responsibilities / opportunities

-       Promote a climate of vibrant learning and exchange of knowledge

-       Provide mentorship to learners from all backgrounds (e.g. residents, fellows, SRNAs)

-       Enhance the learning environment with your own educational activities

Basic Qualifications

  • Board Certification in Anesthesiology
  • Broad clinical experience and facile with regional and neuraxial anesthesia.
  • Leadership experience is helpful, but not required.
  • Experience in clinical and / or translational research is helpful, but not required.
  • Experience in quality assessment / improvement is helpful, but not required.
  • Ability to participate in analysis of financial and accounting data and communicate it to faculty, administrators, health care professional and others in lay terms.
  • Ability to interact with, relate to, and support the activities of a highly experienced clinical faculty and members of an organized division.
  • A management style that emphasizes teamwork, communication, collegiality, flexibility, trust and patience.
  • Ability to deal with leaders throughout the University, community practice HSOs, private practice surgeons outside WUSM, and other divisions of the Department of Anesthesiology.
  • Personal characteristics, which include outstanding verbal communication skills on an individual and group basis, strong clinical skills, and an executive demeanor with high emotional intelligence.
