Faculty Position – Washington University Career Development Program in Drug Abuse and Addiction (NIDA K12) #1010800

We are seeking an early career investigator with a clinical or translational research program focused on substance use and substance use disorder. Candidates from underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. Clinical research is defined as patient-oriented research that is conducted with human subjects or on material of human origin such as tissues or specimens. Translation is defined by the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) as the process of turning observations in the laboratory, clinic and community into interventions that improve the health of individual and the public – from diagnostics and therapeutics to medical procedures and behavioral changes.

Benefits of the NIDA K12 career development program include a minimum of 75% protected research time and up to $50,000 per year in research funds.

The Department of Psychiatry has a long history of major contributions in psychiatric genetics and an outstanding faculty with expertise in all areas of psychiatric research. Substance use disorders have been a major focus of the department’s scientific studies, especially in epidemiology and genetics. The first Genome Wide Association Study (GWAS) results on nicotine dependence were published here, with multiple replications by other groups. Washington University is the lead site for the Substance Use Disorder Workgroup in the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium. Throughout the department, faculty are making vitalconnections between research and clinical care that improve patient care and impact population health. Basic science discoveries are, in many cases, driving government policy (e.g. Tobacco 21, graduated driver’s license). The overall quality of our faculty is reflected in their high level of productivity. The Department presently has 85 awards from NIH. Fifteen faculty members presently hold NIH research career awards. Thus, the department offers an outstanding and scientifically stimulating research environment with vast opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration with nationally and internationally recognized experts in many areas of addiction research.

Washington University School of Medicine and the Department of Psychiatry recognize that by bringing together people from varying backgrounds, experiences and areas of expertise, it can develop richer solutions to complex scientific questions, train culturally sensitive clinicians and provide health care in a way that best serves our diverse patient population. To support these values, we are deeply committed to building a diverse, inclusive and equitable community in which everyone is welcomed and valued.

Diversity at WashU... Diversity is a core value at Washington University School of Medicine and in the Department of Psychiatry. We are committed to building and sustaining inclusive and equitable working and learning environments for all students, staff, trainees, and faculty. We believe that building a diverse team enriches us individually and as a department by exposing us to a broad range of ways to understand and engage with the world, identify challenges, and to discover, design and deliver solutions. More details can be found here.
