Vice-Chair for Clinical Operations

The Washington University Department of Anesthesiology is inviting applications for an exciting and critically important senior leadership role within one of the country’s preeminent academic anesthesiology departments. The Vice-Chair for Clinical Operations’ (VCCO) responsibilities will encompass partnering with the Chair and Executive Director in the following areas: managing the clinical  business and administrative affairs of the department, providing expertise in the areas of finance clinical operations, strategic planning, program development, clinical operations administration, human resource management, physical space management, information systems and contract/affiliation negotiations and management. The VCCO will support Division Chiefs and faculty in the development and implementation of strategy and policies. The VCCO, in collaboration with other clinical leaders,  will plan, lead, organize and direct the entire clinical enterprise within the  Department of Anesthesiology. On many occasions, the VCCO will represent the Chair and Department as the physician executive in meetings with the University, Medical School, other departments, affiliate hospitals, and leaders across the medical center. The VCCO’s overarching goal is to help ensure that the department is efficient, effective, and clinically outstanding, and that we continue to enjoy financial health and clinical growth. The VCCO will help to drive strategic planning for the department and will promote success in all four of our missions: clinical excellence, knowledge advancement, outstanding education, and professional development.

  • ABA Board Certification in Anesthesiology. A Master’s Degree in health administration, business administration, finance, or a related field is required.
  • Significant leadership experience in an academic department, a multi-specialty group practice, faculty practice plan, teaching hospital, research center, consulting firm, or other setting which otherwise demonstrates ability to manage a progressive, complex, multi-divisional, preferably multi-site, academic department.
  • Ability to accurately analyze complex financial and accounting data and communicate it to faculty, administrators, health care professionals and others in lay terms.
  • Ability to oversee the delivery of perioperative services, which enhance revenue, operate efficiently and effectively, and are friendly to clinical and administrative staff and patients.
  • Extensive knowledge of business management and financial theory and practice relating to institutional budgets, research grants and contracts, fund accounting and fee-for-service and managed care patient accounting.
  • Demonstrated package of skills, experience and attributes required to partner in the development, implementation and management of the business and clinical processes underpinning an innovative, enhanced, standardized anesthesia product.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with, relate to, and support the activities of a superb faculty as individuals and members of organized divisions.
  • Leadership as characterized by the ability to develop a common vision for diverse constituents, communicate effectively, sell ideas, and take ownership and responsibility for ideas and actions.
  • A management style that emphasizes teamwork, communication, collegiality, flexibility, trust and patience.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the unique nature of a department with strong research support and a large, active, multi-site, clinical practice and the related requirement for an academically successful and financially sound department.
  • Ability to delegate and still maintain control over operational and financial affairs.
  • Ability to deal with senior executives in the University, academic medical center, affiliate organizations, and various external agencies and organizations.
  • Personal characteristics, which include outstanding verbal communication skills on an individual and group basis, excellent writing skills, professional appearance and an executive demeanor with high emotional intelligence.
