Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs

The Department of Emergency Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) in St. Louis, Missouri is looking to recruit an experienced Emergency Physician for the position of Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs. The Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs will be the clinician-leader for the Department of Emergency Medicine. This leader will have oversight of clinical operations at all clinical sites, and will be instrumental to achieving our goals of effectively and efficiently caring for our patients, supporting our faculty members’ clinical practice, engaging and influencing our clinical partners, and executing our clinical strategic goals.  The candidate should be an expert in cutting edge leadership, management, and operations principles, and be knowledgeable about public policy, finance and billing, and regulations as they affect clinical operations. The candidate should have strong quantitative skills and proven proficiency in analyzing data to optimize performance.  Reporting to the Chair, the Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs will lead the development and implementation of process improvements and standardization of clinical practice at multiple clinical sites. The Vice Chair will be vital in maintaining and growing the clinical mission of the Department and nurturing and maintaining productive relationships at the School of Medicine and BJC HealthCare.

 

Our Emergency Department is a Level I Trauma Center seeing approximately 80,000 patients per year and is the largest Emergency Department in Missouri. WUSM ranks among the top academic medical centers in the world. Each year, a new class of residents and fellows come to WUSM to gain knowledge and cutting-edge skills in emergency medicine. Every year, emergency medicine residents and fellows graduate and settle throughout the nation, treating patients and training new doctors. When hurricanes, tornadoes or earthquakes strike, WUSM emergency physicians deploy with Disaster Medical Assistance Teams to treat patients and provide medical direction. WUSM emergency physicians provide on-site services for area events ranging from sporting events to community fairs. Our EMS physicians train area police, fire departments and other first responders and provide medical direction for many local organizations. Emergency medicine physicians volunteer for medical missions around the world.

 

The St. Louis area boasts a low cost of living with diverse neighborhoods and great schools. The area has world class quality of life options, with museums and art galleries, premier performance halls, numerous parks, lakes, golf courses and several professional sport franchises.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate high quality patient centered clinical care at all sites;
  • Work with the Chair to appoint and oversee Medical Directors at clinical sites;
  • Work with the Chair and hospital leadership to optimize clinical operations, quality improvement and standardization of clinical care across clinical sites;
  • Develop innovative approaches to enhancing access to emergency care e.g., telehealth;
  • Utilizing market data, explore strategic-growth opportunities in the region;
  • Standardize and define reporting of clinical data across sites for optimization of clinical staffing and utilization of clinical data sets; and
  • Maintain a clinical practice.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Team Player with relevant administrative experience;
  • Able to collaborate with nursing and other stakeholders;
  • Experience using data to drive processes and outcomes;
  • Interested in mentoring junior faculty and residents;
  • Interested in personal growth and opportunities; and
  • Appointment to Associate Professor or Professor as applicable.
