Department of Anesthesiology

Anesthesiology

Professor/Vice Chair

Vice-Chair for Professional Development Diversity Equity and Inclusion (VC-PDDEI)

The Vice-Chair for Professional Development Diversity Equity and Inclusion (VC-PDDEI) in the Department of Anesthesiology at Washington University School of Medicine is major leadership opportunity and one that is essential to the mission of the Department of Anesthesiology. The VC-PDDEI will serve on the leadership team of the Department of Anesthesiology, directly reporting to the Chair. The VC-PDDEI also closely partners with all the other leaders in the Department of Anesthesiology, including the Vice-Chair for Clinical Operations, Vice-Chair for Education, Vice-Chair for Research, and Vice-Chair for Health System Liaison to ensure a highly collaborative and prosperous organizational culture.

This individual will provide direction and oversight for all departmental policies, programs, procedures and committees related to professional development for department members; identify needs and implement programs, including education, to support departmental diversity and inclusion initiatives that foster an environment of professionalism, collegiality and respect; partner with division leadership to ensure successful recruitment of faculty.

The Department of Anesthesiology is strongly guided by its quadripartite mission:

  • Delivering state-of-the-art patient care in the areas of preoperative evaluation, intraoperative anesthesia, peripartum care, postoperative critical care, and pain management
  • Providing the highest standard of education to all trainees, and training leaders in clinical care, education, research, and health systems management
  • Making substantial contributions to science
  • Prioritizing the development and well-being of all department members

This is accomplished by creating a just and collaborative culture, by promoting diversity and inclusion at all levels of the organization, and through a focused, individualized investment in career goals and development. The department encourages people from historically marginalized and disadvantaged backgrounds to join and grow in their department. We recognize that our success – and that of everyone around us – depends on how well we value, engage, and include a rich and diverse community.

The VC-PDDEI thus helps create opportunity and drive efforts to increase faculty members’ success through diversity, recruitment, retention, appointment and promotion. The VC-PDDEI not only actively mentors individual faculty, but also furthers departmental programs and extramural opportunities for faculty development in a variety of areas, including service, research, education, and leadership, as well as diversity, equity, inclusion, wellness, and resilience. To that end the VC-DEI will manage a departmental fund designed to support department members in their pursuit of opportunities aimed at furthering their career or academic goals.  The VC-PDDEI will also collaborates across BJC HealthCare, the School of Medicine, and Washington University in St. Louis to advance the professional goals of all members of the department.

The successful candidate will have experience in faculty development and a record of mentorship, with at least two years in a leadership role.  The candidate should be board certified (or equivalent) in anesthesiology, communicate effectively with diverse groups, builds trust and credibility, and aligns with the wide gamut of departmental team members to achieve key strategic, operational, and cultural goals. The successful VC-PDDEI leads through influence and by example, displays an abundance mindset, and is equally comfortable interacting with and seeking input from individuals at all levels of the organization and with many diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
