Director of the Washington University Mass Spectrometry Center
Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine (WUSM) seeks an impactful scientist and leader to serve as the Founding Director of the Washington University Mass Spectrometry Research Center, with a faculty appointment in an appropriate department. The incoming Director will have the unique opportunity to design, realize, and lead the new Mass Spectrometry Research Center slated to open on the WUSM campus this year. The Center will provide service, collaboration, and training in mass spectrometry at the School of Medicine, which currently ranks fourth in the nation in NIH funding.
The Mass Spectrometry Center will provide 8,000 square feet of space for 20-24 new instruments, and associated spaces for sample preparation, computational analysis, and training. Training and education is central to the Center, providing our students, postdocs and fellows with mass spectrometry theory, practical experimental and sample preparation procedures, data analyses, quantification, and visualization. The Mass Spectrometry Center is being constructed in space contiguous to the McDonnell Genome Institute (MGI) and Informatics Institute. This adjacency will facilitate novel combinations of proteomics, lipidomics, and metabolomics with established genomic efforts, genome engineering, high throughput cellular imaging. The large computational and informatic efforts at both Institutes will empower interdisciplinary multi-omic sciences at WUSM. .
The Director will be entrusted with the Center’s mission – to empower the WUSM scientific community with cutting-edge mass spectrometry approaches and expertise to interrogate the proteome, lipidome and metabolome. Leveraging new state-of-the-art mass spectrometry instrumentation, the Director and team will provide expertise encompassing sample preparation, instrument operation, data analysis, collaboration, and teaching. She or he will recruit and mentor a diverse staff of scientists and informaticians. With support from the advisory board and the MGI administrative team, the Director will manage the significant capital investment funds for instrumentation purchases and personnel recruitment. Beyond the startup investment, the Director will govern Center revenue for operations and future growth. Globally, the Director will create and support a vision for this interactive, technology-forward, innovative and supportive center for mass spectrometry. In doing so, the Director will engage collaboratively with other Center Directors and investigators to further empower WUSM as a leader in biomedical mass spectrometry.
A PhD in biochemistry, chemistry, physics, engineering, computer science or related field is required. The Director will bring a minimum of 10 years of experience in mass spectrometry and will have demonstrated strong interpersonal skills that empower leadership and mentorship. The successful applicant will bring expertise in instrumentation operation, maintenance, repair and method development. Moreover, the Director will be proficient in mass spectrometry data analysis platforms, with expected expertise in proteomics, lipidomics, or metabolomics. The successful candidate is expected to have demonstrated success in project design and consultation for collaborators, teaching practical interpretation of mass spectrometry datasets, effectively communicating project progress, writing technical summaries, preparing presentations, and participating in publications and grant writing.
