Director of Adult Audiology
The Department of Otolaryngology at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine (WUSM) is seeking a Ph.D. level audiologist to serve as Director of Adult Audiology. The Department provides the highest quality care through evidence-based best practice, clinical and scientific innovation, and training the future leaders in our field.
Adult Audiology presently consists of three clinics with eight full-time audiologists and four staff members, with continued expansion planned. Primary services include diagnostic audiology, hearing aid selection and fitting, fitting of bone-anchored devices, assistive devices, ototoxic monitoring and electrophysiology. Close connections are in place with the Department’s Dizziness and Balance Center, as well as with the Adult Cochlear Implant Team. In addition, there is extensive collaboration with the Program in Audiology and Communication Sciences (PACS), physicians, residents, and other departments within the medical school and community.
The Director’s position consists of significant administrative responsibility including oversight of staff, financial and clinical productivity, clinic operations and support, and program development. This will include assisting with the department expansion efforts in satellite offices around the metropolitan region; helping further develop the local, national and international reputation of Audiology at Washington University; and actively participating in campus, community and national organizations.
The Director is expected to maintain the highest practice standards for all patients and will provide some direct patient care, as balanced with other responsibilities. The applicant should be well-versed in diagnostic audiology, hearing aids and other devices, and electrophysiology.
Audiology at Washington University has developed its national and international reputation, in part due to a prolific Hearing Aid Research Lab. Continuance of a strong research portfolio is highly desired. Beyond scholarly activity, the Director is expected to mentor and develop research audiologists and students. This includes developing research projects, publication in peer-reviewed journals, and presentation at national and international conferences.
The Director will also be responsible for both classroom and/or clinical teaching in the Department and in collaboration with the PACS program. There is significant opportunity to teach both otolaryngology residents and Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) students both in the classroom and in the clinic.
Qualifications for the position include a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree from an accredited university, with emphasis in Audiology, and employment experience within a large medical center. Experience in administration, research, teaching and clinical service is preferred. The applicant should have a strong work ethic with excellent vision, strong communication skills, and organizational skills. He/she should have or be eligible for Missouri Audiology licensure.
