Research Associate Professor of Surgery

The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis is seeking a Research Associate Professor of Surgery (level will be based on experience) to lead the Cardiac Surgical Research Laboratories.  The position has two primary missions.  First, the laboratory investigates the clinical and scientific problems that are specific to adult cardiac surgery.  Second, we are committed to training future cardiothoracic surgeons in basic science and research methodology, and have one of only two NIH T32 grants to train future physician-scientists in our specialty.

 

The laboratory has been a productive research environment with a history of continuous NIH support over the last three decades. Since its inception, our laboratory has performed fundamental research that has let to major contributions to surgical practice. In particular, the laboratory has developed surgical procedures for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias that have spawned both surgical and catheter-based therapies. The Maze procedure, developed in our laboratory, has become the surgical gold standard for the treatment of atrial fibrillation. We have been involved in developing mechanistic understanding of cardiac pathology and using this information to develop new treatment strategies built on this scientific foundation. The laboratory has broad expertise spanning molecular biology techniques, genomics and proteomics, cellular electrophysiology, cardiac physiology and hemodynamics, cardiac mapping (epicardial, optical and, body surface) and sophisticated functional MRI studies. The laboratory has active projects involving both small and large animals.

The applicant must have earned a doctorate in Biomedical Engineering, electrophysiology, cardiac physiology, or a closely related field; have experience in small/large animal research, human tissue mapping and imaging CT/MRI etc. The ideal candidate would have a distinguished record in research and scholarship that will allow appointment to a senior position; and demonstrated collaborative leadership, administrative, and interpersonal skills. The applicant should have a demonstrable commitment to a culturally diverse environment and recognition and service at the national and international level.Candidates should preferably be a US citizen or permanent resident.
