Primary Care Program Director

 

The internal medicine primary care program director at Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University oversees the training of 15-20 trainees in the primary care track, which is part of an internal medicine residency with 175 residents. The position is an Associate Program Director role, which reports to and works closely with the core program director. The track aims to produce outstanding general internists with a comprehensive skillset to care for patients in the community or academic primary care setting; to be leaders of teams in either of these settings; to pursue successful careers as clinician-educators or researchers; to engage in advocacy and social change.

Broad responsibilities of the primary care program director include teaching and role modeling; curriculum development, implementation and monitoring; administration; recruitment; and publishing.

Teaching and Role Modeling: The primary care program director will teach in a variety of settings and through these will teach the art and science of medicine and role model professionalism and humanism. Teaching venues include small group case conferences, skill sessions, larger group didactics, precepting residents in the outpatient clinic.

Curriculum development, implementation and monitoring: The primary care program director is responsible for the development, implementation, monitoring and review and coordination of all aspects of the primary care curriculum. Primary care curriculum includes about 60% outpatient time and 40% inpatient time, that progressively increases over the three years of training. The outpatient time includes a continuity clinic, continuity in community physicians’ offices, rotations in specialty clinics (ex. Ambulatory orthopedics, OBGYN, rheumatology, allergy/immunology, urology). Trainees have the opportunity to individualize some of their training to develop skills in unique areas such as care for the underserved, care for patients with HIV or HCV, women’s health, sports medicine, etc. There is a Quality Improvement curriculum that leads to a certificate from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement. The overall curriculum must be maintained and improved to meet the aims of the primary care track ( as stated above); remain in accordance with ACGME and institutional policies and requirements; hospital service obligations and institutional resources.

Administration: Administrative duties will take 30% of the primary care program directors time. Activities will include planning and overseeing resident schedules; curriculum design, implementation and improvement; evaluating and providing feedback to residents; mentoring and coaching residents; faculty development for primary care preceptors; recruitment activities (review of applicants, interviewing and ranking); orienting new residents and track residents as they transition across the continuum of training.

Recruitment: The primary care program director works in conjunction with the core program director to identify and select candidates for the training program.

Requirements: The primary care program director must be board certified in general internal medicine and have experience in providing primary care. The director must also have an understanding of education theory and methodology and an understanding of competency-based education. Prior experience or training in educational leadership and research as well as demonstrated excellence as a writer would be assets.
