Associate Dean for Medical Student Education

Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis invites applications and nominations for the position of Associate Dean for Medical Student Education.  Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean for Education of the School of Medicine, the Associate Dean for Medical Student Education oversees all aspects of the medical student curriculum including, but not limited to, development and implementation of a centrally managed, coordinated, and integrated curriculum; chairing various curriculum committees; facilitating education innovation; and co-leading accreditation efforts.  Additionally, the Associate Dean;

  1. Will have a central role in the strategic planning for and implementation of curriculum renewal.
  2. Has oversight of the operations and strategic planning of the curriculum office.
  3. Supervises curriculum office staff.
  4. Oversees faculty support in all aspects of course planning, management, and evaluation.
  5. Collaborates closely with the Associate Dean of Student Affairs in student support activities, and school-wide student communication.
  6. Provides leadership to various committees, orientation events, and education initiatives.

For over a century, Washington University School of Medicine has consistently been recognized as one of the country's premier medical schools, with nineteen Nobel laureates being associated with the School of Medicine.  Eleven of the School of Medicine’s present faculty members have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, and 25 members belong to its Institute of Medicine.   The School of Medicine teaches an exceptionally strong student body of over 1,300 total health professions students in its combined programs, and attracts an exceptional group of residents and fellows.  The medical student program ranks first in the nation in the entering scores of its medical school classes.  The medical student program comprises approximately 600 students in its MD, MD/PhD and combined MD/master-level degree programs.  It also includes one of the largest and finest Medical Scientist Training Program-funded MD/PhD programs in the country for which the Associate Dean will provide partial oversight. 

The successful candidate will be a strategic and innovative leader; the position will require thoughtful strategic planning and the ability to lead and garner support for new and innovative educational initiatives. Consistent with this requisite attribute, the candidate will be knowledgeable about the changing landscape in medical education and have demonstrated the ability to lead organizational change to support innovative educational initiatives. 

Experience with outcomes-based education and integration of assessment methods into curricular design will be essential, as well as possession of a clear vision of how information technology must be leveraged to support teaching. A leader who is highly organized, understands organizational structure, demonstrates effective delegation, and sets clear expectations for faculty and staff will prove successful in this position.  Foremost, the successful candidate will strive to carry forth the educational mission while being an effective and collaborative leader with colleagues, faculty and, most importantly, to students. The successful candidate must have a commitment to diversity and foster an inclusive environment.

The individual selected for this position must hold an MD, MD/PhD or PhD and have a track record of leadership in medical education at an LCME-accredited medical school; academic experience and achievements must be commensurate with appointment at the Associate Professor rank or higher.
