The Division of General Anesthesiology within the Department of Anesthesiology at Washington University in St. Louis and Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJH) is recruiting a Director of Orthopaedic Anesthesia. The Department of Anesthesiology at Washington University is committed to advancing the specialty of anesthesiology, improving patient outcomes through meaningful discovery, and has ranked in the top five in NIH funding for over 10 years.

This is a crucial leadership position within the Division and the Department, as well as an exciting career opportunity for an energetic and enthusiastic individual. The Director will work closely with the Chief of General Anesthesiology to develop new clinical protocols and pathways, enhance the educational experience of residents on the rotation, and foster research productivity. As such, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to recruit new members to the orthopaedic anesthesia team. The Division is committed to strengthening and expanding ongoing research collaborations between its faculty and other team members. The emphasis will be on leveraging the strengths of the orthopaedic program at BJH, which encompasses all subspecialties and is a Medicare Center of Excellence and JCAHO Gold Seal recipient for joint replacement. Examples of resources available to achieve the goals of this position include seed research funding allocated through a competitive mechanism by both BJH and the Department, a robust clinical and basic research infrastructure, and an anesthesia-run simulation center. Leadership development and other personal advancement initiatives will be encouraged, and the Director will have logistical and administrative support.

The Division provides perioperative anesthesia care for all types of orthopaedic cases, including hip and knee replacements (~2,500/year), elbow and shoulder replacements (~300/year), complex spine operations (~500/year), and ortho trauma cases (~1,500/year). Washington University is a level 1 trauma center and a referral center for orthopaedic oncology specializing in limb salvage techniques.

The ideal candidate will be an anesthesiologist experienced in both general and regional anesthesia with demonstrated achievements in clinical, educational and/or research innovation.

Both domestic and international candidates are encouraged to apply. Interested candidates should submit a one-page cover letter, their CV and names with contact information of 3 references.
