Senior Associate Dean for Education
Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis invites applications and nominations for the position of Senior Associate Dean for Education. Reporting to the Executive Vice Chancellor for Medical Affairs and Dean of the School of Medicine, the Senior Associate Dean for Education oversees all aspects of the continuum of physician education and coordinates activities with other educational programs including Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Audiology and Communication Sciences, and several master-level degree programs. Additionally, the Senior Associate Dean has oversight of medical school admissions, financial aid, registrar, student affairs and medical student research and will play a role in campus diversity and inclusion initiatives. The Senior Associate Dean will be charged with leading the educational endeavors for one of the most distinguished medical schools in the country. For over a century, Washington University School of Medicine has been consistently recognized as one of the country's premier medical schools. It also has the country's top-rated programs in Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Audiology and Communication Sciences. Nineteen Nobel laureates have been associated with the School of Medicine. Eleven of its present faculty members have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences and 25 members belong to its Institute of Medicine. The School of Medicine teaches an exceptionally strong student body of over 1,300 students and ranks first in the nation in the entering scores of its medical school classes. It also attracts an exceptional group of residents and fellows and has the largest and one of the finest MD/PhD programs in the country. The successful candidate for Senior Associate Dean will be a visionary educational leader with a deep understanding of educational theory and practice and an appreciation of how good learning and teaching require a supportive institutional structure and learning environment. The successful candidate will be able to advance the School of Medicine's educational mission by promoting curricular innovation, research in medical education, continuous educational quality improvement, faculty career development, and collaboration among educational programs. Most of all, the successful candidate will ensure that medical education be conducted as professional education, not as vocational training. The ideal candidate must have demonstrable leadership experience in medical education at a LCME-accredited medical school in areas such as innovative curriculum development, implementation, and assessment; a strong appreciation and respect for inter-professional education with a commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive culture. Having the leadership to create a vision, provide strategic direction, and create an environment to stimulate medical education endeavors while facing today’s challenging issues of medical education is essential as is proven administrative experience with budgetary responsibility within a large, complex academic organization.
Candidates will have a MD, MD/PhD, MD/EdD, or equivalent degree with a proven record of educational scholarship and be qualified for appointment as an Associate or Full Professor in one of the departments of the School of Medicine.
