The Department of Neurology at Washington University School of Medicine invites applications and nominations for Section Head of Neuromuscular Medicine.  This is an exceptional opportunity for an accomplished academic leader to direct and expand a nationally recognized neuromuscular medicine program within one of the country’s premier academic neurology departments.  An endowed professorship is available for highly qualified candidates.

The Section of Neuromuscular Medicine is uniquely structured as an integrated adult and pediatric program, bringing together faculty and clinical programs across Washington University School of Medicine and St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Adult and pediatric neuromuscular specialists’ function within a single academic section with shared missions in clinical care, research, education, and therapeutic development. Consistent with this integrated structure, candidates with either an adult or pediatric neuromuscular medicine background will be considered for the role of Section Head.

The Section Head will provide strategic clinical, academic, and operational leadership for a program that is internationally recognized for excellence in patient care, research, and education. The position offers the opportunity to shape the future of the subspecialty within an expanding program supported by outstanding institutional resources, collaborative faculty, and a deeply integrated neuroscience environment.

The Section delivers specialized care for patients with a broad range of neuromuscular diseases and evaluates more than 2,000 outpatient visits annually through its neuromuscular clinics. Clinical expertise spans both common and rare disorders affecting muscles, peripheral nerves, neuromuscular junctions, and motor neurons.

The Section maintains one of the nation’s leading neuromuscular medicine research enterprises, with faculty holding independent NIH funding and leading investigations in translational neuroscience and clinical research.  The Section Head will be expected to articulate and advance a strategic vision for continued research growth and interdisciplinary collaboration with Washington University’s robust biomedical research ecosystem. The Department of Neurology is ranked #2 nationally in NIH funding among neurology departments and more than 185 faculty members with over $101 million in annual NIH funding.

Education is a core mission of the Section. The Section Head will oversee a robust educational portfolio spanning undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate training programs.  The section sponsors an ACGME- and UCNS-accredited Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship with four fellowship positions available annually.  A one-year fellowship with additional training opportunities is often available.

Qualified candidates will possess an MD, DO, or MD/PhD degree; be board certified in Neurology or Child Neurology and have subspecialty expertise in Neuromuscular Medicine; and be eligible for Missouri licensure. Candidates should qualify for appointment at the Associate Professor level or higher and demonstrate a distinguished record of academic accomplishment, leadership, mentorship, and program development.
