Vice Chair for Education
The Washington University Department of Anesthesiology is seeking applications for an exciting and important senior leadership role within one of the country’s preeminent academic anesthesiology departments. The overarching responsibility of the Vice-Chair for Education is to provide strategic leadership for and oversight of all educational initiatives. This includes undergraduate medical education; graduate medical education for anesthesiology residents and all eleven sub-specialty fellowships; advanced nursing educational programs that are related to anesthesia (Student Registered Nurse Anesthesia training program) and critical care (Acute Care Nurse Practitioner training program); and life-long learning for all members of the department. The Vice-Chair for Education will lead and further develop an education division that places the highest value on educating future leaders across all of anesthesiology and related areas. The Vice-Chair for Education, in collaboration with other leaders, will advise on the potential growth of the residency program, the fellowships, ACNP program, and SRNA program to meet increasing national needs. The Vice-Chair for Education will help identify and mentor faculty members with an interest in medical education, work in partnership with the Associate Vice-Chair for Faculty and Educator Development to recruit additional clinician educators, and restructure and grow the simulation education program. As a key department leader, the Vice-Chair for Education will foster innovative ways to support and nurture the department’s collaborative culture, with a strong emphasis on learner well-being, in the context of a safe and inclusive learning environment. The Vice-Chair for Education will advocate effectively and collaboratively for the department’s educational mission in the context of the department’s responsibilities and resources. The Vice-Chair for Education will also continue to further develop processes and technology for robust faculty and trainee feedback and performance, as well as for the evaluation of current educational curricula.
Competitive candidates will meet the following criteria:
- ABA Board Certification in Anesthesiology
- Expertise in an area of clinical practice within anesthesiology
- Established leadership experience with residency and fellowship programs
- Leadership as characterized by the ability to develop a common vision for diverse constituents, communicate effectively, and take ownership and responsibility for ideas and actions
- A management style that emphasizes teamwork, communication, collegiality, flexibility, trust, and patience
- Ability to navigate with senior leaders across the University, academic medical center, affiliate organizations, and various external agencies and organizations
- Personal characteristics that include outstanding verbal communication skills on an individual and group basis, excellent writing skills
- Demonstrated success in promoting and supporting a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion
- Exceptional emotional intelligence and a strong commitment to building a collaborative and safe culture
