Director of Molecular Infectious Diseases and Associate Director of Clinical Microbiology
The Department of Pathology & Immunology and the Division of Laboratory and Genomic Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis is seeking applications for a faculty member at the Associate Professor level to serve as Medical Director of Molecular Infectious Disease Laboratory and Associate Director of Clinical Microbiology Laboratory at Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJH). Qualified applicants at the Assistant Professor or Professor level will also be considered. BJH is a 1,400 bed tertiary care hospital that serves a diverse patient population, including oncology, surgical, and transplant services. In addition, the clinical microbiology laboratory provides services for other hospitals in the BJC HealthCare System, including St. Louis Children’s Hospital and several community hospitals.
The clinical microbiology section in the Department of Pathology & Immunology is fast-paced and dynamic, home to faculty with diverse clinical and research interests, and has a long record of innovation, research, and scholarship. The BJH Microbiology Laboratory is located in a state-of-the art facility, equipped with laboratory automation for bacteriology, extensive space and instrumentation for molecular diagnostics, and MALDI-TOF MS. The laboratory delivers services in bacteriology, antimicrobial susceptibly testing, mycobacteriology, parasitology, mycology, and molecular diagnostics.
Clinical duties will include participation in medical director oversight of all areas of the clinical molecular infectious disease lab, including test development and quality programs. Proficiency in infectious disease surgical pathology is preferred. The successful applicant will work closely with the Division of Infectious Diseases and other clinical services. The Department of Pathology & Immunology at Washington University is home to a CPEP accredited fellowship program in Clinical and Public Health Microbiology. Instruction and training of Microbiology Fellows is an important component of this position. Additional responsibilities will include education of infectious disease fellows, pathology residents and fellows, medical students, and medical technologists. In addition, the individual will participate in clinical, translational, and/or basic science research activities.
Candidates must possess a M.D. and/or Ph.D. and be board-certified in clinical microbiology and/or medical microbiology (ABP-MM or ABMM). The successful candidate will have experience in validation and implementation of new laboratory methods, excellent interpersonal skills, enthusiasm for teaching, and a collaborative attitude. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
