Internal Medicine Clerkship Assistant Director

The Internal Medicine Clerkship Assistant Director (AsCD) at Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) is an acknowledged expert in their field of study. The AsCD contributes to the overall professional, administrative, and educational leadership for the clerkship as well as designs, manages, and evaluates the Internal Medicine Clerkship according to WUSM’s policies and Educational Program Objectives (EPOs) in partnership with the Clerkship Director, Associate Clerkship Director, and Vice Chair of Education. The role provides 0.1 FTE to perform the following specific duties:

Design
• In collaboration with Internal Medicine Clerkship leadership, determine the appropriate content, learning objectives (knowledge, skills, behaviors), learning methods, and assessment tools for the clerkship.
• Design educational activities that align with the clerkship’s learning objectives.
• Ensure robust vertical and horizontal curricular integration throughout all phases of the curriculum via collaboration with other courses, clerkships, and Thread Directors in collaboration with Internal Medicine Clerkship leadership.

Implementation
Teaching Faculty/Instructors
• Recruit appropriate teaching faculty for delivery and facilitation of educational experiences (in collaboration with thread directors when applicable) and ensure all individuals participating in a teaching activity are familiar with the plans for clerkship activities and understand where the activity fits within the broader curriculum.
• Assign teaching responsibilities for teaching faculty and gather all necessary teaching materials (including objectives, resources, and assessments) to meet agreed-upon requirements in a timely manner
• Ensure goals, objectives, outcome measures, guidelines, and policies are communicated to all teaching faculty.
• Ensure that any faculty with supervising and assessment responsibility have an appropriate faculty appointment at WUSM.
• Areas of teaching focus will include: Foundational Week, Patient Stigma Reflection, Community Engagement, and Warm-up Rotations.

Students
• Uphold the competencies, learning goals, outcome measures, and all WUSM guidelines and policies for the clerkship in interactions with medical students.

Assessments
• Support the Internal Medicine Clerkship’s program of assessment, facilitating narrative assessment sessions and collecting written data from frontline assessors.
• Implement and oversee the Internal Medicine Clerkship Competency Committee (CCC) for student assessment.
• Per WUSM/OMSE policies and guidelines, return all assessment results to students in a timely manner, to support student learning and ongoing development.
• Contribute to writing the Structured Evaluative Letter (SEL) for students who apply to internal medicine residency and the selection of the recipient of the annual ACP Clerkship Award.

General Administration
• Ensure adherence to all guidelines, procedures, and policies as developed by curriculum committees and WUSM leadership.
• Ensure a professional learning climate for teaching faculty, staff, and students.
• Oversee teaching activities for the clerkship to provide continuity in the curricular element administration and to monitor quality and consistency.
• Suggested annual meetings with the Department of Medicine Vice Chair of Education to receive a performance evaluation based on the responsibilities described in this document.

Continuous Improvement and Innovation
• In collaboration with the clerkship team, evaluate the current curriculum in achieving learning outcomes.
• In collaboration with the clerkship team, generate ideas for improvement and innovation.

Leadership and Service
• Demonstrate and cultivate educational leadership in the clerkship and broader educational community.
• Watch recorded meetings and retreats, such as Phase 2 Ops, Clerkship Directors’, and Clerkship team meetings, when timing permits and/or when medical education leadership indicates an important issue was discussed.
• When timing permits, attend Department of Medicine Undergraduate Medical Education monthly meetings
• Remain informed of trends and practices in medical education, pedagogy, technology, and administration.
• Contribute to new Internal Medicine Clerkship initiatives as they arise.

A clinician with an MD or DO degree with board certification in Internal Medicine.
