Chief, Pediatric Neurosurgery
Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) seeks an outstanding, academic pediatric neurosurgeon to provide overall leadership, strategy and day-to-day oversight of one of the preeminent pediatric neurosurgery divisions. Major organizational and financial commitments have been made to expand clinical and academic programs including directing a recent $1.6M philanthropic gift to establish a new neuroscience research center – the focus of which will be determined, in part, by the incoming chief. Supplementing this extraordinary institutional support are three endowed professorships within the division, one of which is available for the incoming chief. The division chief also serves and pediatric neurosurgeon-in-chief for St. Louis Children’s Hospital (SLCH).
The division has a long-standing reputation as a national and international leader placing at or near the top in numerous performance metrics including cases performed, NIH funding, number of publications, and leadership development. Including the current chief, the division has five, full-time neurosurgeons who see over 1,100 new patients and perform approximately 900 operative cases per year. The division has robust programs in brain tumor, epilepsy, craniosynostosis, Chiari malformation, endoscopic treatment of hydrocephalus, fetal surgery, spinal disorders, vascular, and selective dorsal rhizotomy. The division has an exceedingly collaborative relationship with St. Louis Children’s Hospital, the largest pediatric hospital in the region and the dominant market leader. The hospital discharges approximately 8,500 patients per year and ranks #5 in the U.S. News & World Report list of “Best Children’s Hospitals for Neurology & Neurosurgery.”
The division of pediatric neurosurgery is an integral component of the department of neurosurgery, nationally recognized across all aspects of its tripartite mission. The department runs a large, complex neurosurgical practice across two academic hospitals and seven community hospitals and clinics performing nearly 4700 cases annually. The department’s robust research enterprise currently boasts the most R01-funded neurosurgeons in the US with two marquee multi-investigator translational research centers – the Brain Tumor Center at Siteman Cancer Center and the Division of Neurotechnology. The department runs outstanding training programs including a large, diverse, and top-ranked residency and several subspecialty fellowships including pediatrics, brain tumor, endovascular, spine, and peripheral nerve.
The successful candidate for the chief of pediatric neurosurgery will be a visionary and strategic leader with leadership experience in an academic medical center. Expertise in brain tumors or spine deformities is desirable. Qualified candidates will possess an MD, DO or MD/PhD, be certified by the American Board of Pediatric Neurosurgery (ABPNS), hold or be qualified to obtain an unrestricted license to practice medicine in Missouri and be eligible for appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or above.
