Cytopathology Faculty

The Department of Pathology and Immunology at Washington University School of Medicine is seeking a pathologist to join its Cytopathology section on the Clinician track. The section is currently staffed by three pathologists and receives ~15,600 specimens per year, including 7,250 Pap smears and 2,320 fine needle aspirates. The Department as a whole receives approximately 70,000 surgical pathology specimens per year and operates on a subspecialty model.

The Department (http://pathology.wustl.edu/): The Department of Pathology & Immunology excels in basic and clinical research as well as delivery of outstanding pathology and laboratory medicine services. In 2015, the department moved to a new facility at the center of the Washington University Medical Campus. The Department provides a supportive environment for research and teaching. Across nine AP fellowships, six CP fellowships, and the core residency program, there are a total of 66 GME trainees. Cytopathology comprises one of the AP fellowships. 

The School (http://medicine.wustl.edu): Eighteen Nobel laureates have trained or carried out research here. Thirteen faculty members are fellows of the National Academy of Sciences, and 24 belong to the Academy of Medicine. WUSM is second among U.S. medical schools in grants received from the National Institutes of Health ($575 million in 2021).

The City: St. Louis is an urban center of diversity, culture, and entrepreneurship within a metro area of 2.6 million.  The region offers affordable housing, unique neighborhoods, and convenient transportation. There is easy access to outdoor recreation opportunities.

Candidates must possess M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degrees as well as certification in Anatomic and/or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology through the American Board of Pathology. Fellowship training and board certification or eligibility in cytopathology is required. The successful candidate will have demonstrated competence in independently managing complex cytopathology cases. Academic productivity in the area of cytopathology is preferred. In addition, an interest in a secondary area of surgical pathology, particularly breast or gynecologic pathology, is encouraged. The candidate is expected to have excellent interpersonal and communication skills as well as interest in education of medical students and residents, fellows, and, as appropriate, research fellows and post-docs.
