Associate Dean for Student Affairs

The Associate Dean for Student Affairs is responsible for providing proactive leadership for the delivery of programs and services to support medical students’ academic achievement as well as personal and professional development across the student lifecycle. As a member of the Office of Education, the Associate Dean for Student Affairs will collaborate with the offices of Medical Student Education, Admissions, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Registrar, and Financial Aid, the Assistant Dean for Assessment, the Associate Dean for Educational Strategy, and the MSTP. This position reports to the Senior Associate Dean and Vice Chancellor for Medical Education and is a 0.5 FTE position.                                                                      

Essential Functions:

  • Collaborate with Office of Education’s administrative teams, oversees the Office of Student Life including Career Counseling, student programs, and student milestone events.
  • Provide individual support and academic, career, and personal advising to MD and dual degree students. Direct supervision of the assistant dean of career counseling and collaborative supervision of the office of Student Life employees.
  • Proactively develop, deliver, and monitor programming and processes to support medical student success, including academic support, career counseling, coaching, and well-being initiatives.
  • Participate in and ensure the creation of appropriate individual advising and class-wide programs to assist students with career exploration throughout medical school and advising for the residency application and The Match. Support Career Counseling as needed in the creation of the Medical Student Performance Evaluations for senior medical students.
  • Oversee the management of all student milestone events, including collaboration and partnership with relevant Student Life, Office of Education, School of Medicine, and University units to enable the successful production of MD Student Orientation, the White Coat Ceremony, the Donor Remembrance Ceremony, Commencement, various student awards ceremonies, and others.
  • Participates as a member of various education and administrative committees, including but not limited to curriculum committees, committees to monitor student progress and promotion, well-being committees, as well as ad hoc task forces as necessary. Serve as the administrative lead for Committee for Academic Promotion.
  • Participate in broad oversight of student discipline and accountability issues regarding academic standing, compliance requirements, professional conduct, and implementation of student-related institutional policies.
  • Serve as a primary point of communication between school administration, medical student organizations, and medical students. Ensure all student groups are values aligned, further the education of our students, and that they have adequate oversight, including fiscal and administrative. Provide leadership training and mentoring for elected student leaders and leaders of student interest groups. Serve as an advocate for student concerns and needs with the faculty and administration.
  • Promote student engagement and well-being through cultural, social, and recreational offerings and the execution of the Student Life strategic plan.
  • Facilitate arrangements for special tutorial assistance, test-taking assessments, learning disability evaluations, and mental health support, as necessary. Work closely with the Student Success Team to ensure all students receive academic and personal support they need and to ensure communication of student needs, including leaves of absence to all who have a need to know.  Work closely with Disability Resources to guide the implementation of accommodations.
  • Participate in the continual evaluation of all Office of Student Life programs and processes to ensure optimization of services and resources for students.
  • Collaborate with graduate and professional program partners on Danforth and at WUSM.

Applicants must have an M.D., D.O. or Ph.D.


Experience in medical school academic administration (e.g., a dean’s office position) or in an educational leadership role such as a course director, clerkship director, advisor/coach, residency or fellowship program director, or equivalent is strongly preferred

The candidate should have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.

The candidate should be detail oriented and possess excellent time management skills

Strong knowledge about medical student education with proven leadership and experience in medical student advising.
