The Washington University Department of Anesthesiology is seeking qualified applicants for an exciting and critically important leadership role within one of the country's preeminent academic anesthesiology departments at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.The Director of Quality Improvement in Anesthesiology is needed to streamline the QI projects within the department using analytics for the purpose of clinical quality measurement and improvement.   This integral member of the Innovation, Quality Improvement, Research, Informatics, and Patient Safety (INQUIRI+) team will collaborate with several divisions including Division of Clinical and Translational Research (DoCTR), Education, Perioperative Medicine and Clinical Operationsand will work coordinate projects with the residency, fellowship, SRNA and APP trainee programs within the department.  

 

Mission-Related Responsibilities

  •  Coordinate and conduct meaningful QI and informatics research projects with members of the department and trainees.
  •  Create a departmental governance process for initiation, prioritization, and completion of QI and informatics research processes
  • Work with division leaders to streamline the QI and informatics research processes
  • Coordinate with clinical operations and IT office regarding support for prioritized and accepted QI projects.
  • Streamline the use of internal tool (Multi Center Perioperative Outcomes Group and Epic data sets) to be utilized by members of the department for QI and informatics research
  • Provide education to relevant stakeholders, including trainees, on QI and informatics research
  • Work with other leaders of INQUIRI+ to help ensure success in all of its priority areas

 

Key Experience and Attributes

  • Demonstrated clinical experience
  • Demonstrated interest in the patient safety and quality improvement arena
  • Demonstrated subject matter knowledge in developing changes that result in improvement across the perioperative continuum
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with others that emphasizes teamwork, communication, collegiality, flexibility, trust, and patience with different care team members and organizations, as many QI and informatics research initiatives involve both WUSM and BJC, different departments, and other unique care team members
  •  Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Understanding of Epic’s data and reporting infrastructure (ideally, Epic’s Physician Builder certification or willing to complete)
  • Ability to write reports in Epic
  •  Previous experience working with MPOG, Vizient and other data sources
  • Prior involvement in informatics related research projects
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with, relate to, and support the activities of clinician colleagues
  •  Leadership as characterized by the ability to develop a common vision for diverse constituents, communicate effectively, sell ideas, and take ownership and responsibility for ideas and actions
  • A management style that emphasizes teamwork, communication, collegiality, flexibility, trust, and patience
  • Ability to deal with leaders throughout the University, academic medical center, affiliate organizations, and various external agencies and organizations
  • Personal characteristics, include outstanding verbal communication skills on an individual and group basis, strong writing skills, and an executive demeanor with high emotional intelligence
  • Board Certification in Anesthesiology and appropriate primary board certification
