Director of Anesthesiology of the Center of Advanced Medicine in South County

The Washington University Department of Anesthesiology is seeking qualified applicants for an exciting and critically important leadership role within one of the country's preeminent academic anesthesiology departments at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. The Director of Anesthesiology of the Center for Advanced Medicine (CAM) in South County is needed to lead the clinical and educational missions of the Anesthesiology Department.

The CAM in South County is a growing outpatient facility supporting the community by treating approximately 4,000 surgical/procedural cases per year.  The Division provides expertise in operative and regional anesthesiology, and serves the local community while working closely with our Washington University Physician colleagues.

 The principal activities of the Anesthesiology Director of CAM in South County include the clinical practice of anesthesiology care, leadership of anesthesiology faculty, CRNAs and anesthesia trainees working at the CAM in South County, communication with surgical and BJC leadership to coordinate care as needed, quality improvement programs, involvement in the strategic growth activities, and personnel management of faculty, staff, and trainees.

The Clinical Anesthesiology Practice responsibilities include:

-        Oversee the clinical care provided by faculty, CRNAs, and trainees in the areas of operative and regional anesthesiology.

Professional development responsibilities include:

-        Oversee the professional development of faculty, staff, and trainees

-        Support quality improvement including investment in faculty members' career development

-        Actively promote diversity, equity, and inclusion

Administrative responsibilities

-        With the support of Anesthesiology central administrative staff, oversee the administrative success of the clinical practice.

-        Formulate and manage staffing plans for efficient clinical operations

-        Provide leadership to program development and growth within the CAM in South County

-        As Director of Anesthesiology, serve on the Medical Executive Committee, Quality Review Committee, and Credentials Committee for the CAM in South County.

-        Support and engage Hospital Leadership in strategic growth for the CAM in South County.

-        Work closely with the North Division Chief of Anesthesiology and other leaders within the Anesthesiology Department to further the successes of the Anesthesiology North Division, the Department of Anesthesiology, and Washington University School of Medicine

  • Board Certification in Anesthesiology and appropriate primary board certification
  • Broad clinical experience in Anesthesiology including general operative and regional anesthesiology.
  • Leadership experience in an academic or community department
  • Ability to oversee the delivery of anesthesiology services which enhance revenue, operate efficiently and effectively, and enhance patient experience and clinician well-being
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with, relate to, and support the activities of clinician colleagues
  • Leadership as characterized by the ability to develop a common vision for diverse constituents, communicate effectively, sell ideas, and take ownership and responsibility for ideas and actions
  • A management style that emphasizes teamwork, communication, collegiality, flexibility, trust, and patience
  • Ability to deal with leaders throughout the University, academic medical center, affiliate organizations, and various external agencies and organizations
  • Personal characteristics, include outstanding verbal communication skills on an individual and group basis, strong writing skills, and an executive demeanor with high emotional intelligence
