Progress West Hospital Division Chief

The Washington University Department of Anesthesiology is seeking qualified applicants for an exciting and critically important leadership role within one of the country's preeminent academic anesthesiology departments at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. The Chief of the Progress West Hospital Division will lead the broad clinical and educational responsibilities of the Progress West Hospital Division.

 The Progress West Hospital Division brings together compassionate, highly skilled clinicians to provide comprehensive anesthesia care at Progress West Hospital.  Progress West Hospital is a 72-bed licensed facility which serves the local community and supports the practices of local independent physicians and Washington University physicians.  The Division provides expertise in operative, obstetrical, endoscopic, and regional anesthesiology as well as providing procedural support all areas of the hospital including the ICU.

 The principal activities of the Progress West Hospital Division overseen by the Division Chief include the clinical practice of anesthesiology care, communication with Hospital Leadership and other medical specialties to coordinate care as needed, quality improvement programs, involvement in the strategic growth activities of the hospital, and personnel management of faculty, staff, and trainees within the Progress West Hospital Division.

  • Board Certification in Anesthesiology and appropriate primary board certification
  • Broad clinical experience in Anesthesiology including general operative, obstetrical and regional anesthesiology.
  • Leadership experience in an academic or community department
  • Ability to participate in analysis of financial and accounting data and communicate it to faculty, administrators, health care professionals, and others in lay terms
  • Ability to oversee the delivery of anesthesiology services which enhance revenue, operate efficiently and effectively, and enhance patient experience and clinician well-being
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with, relate to, and support the activities of a superb faculty as individuals and members of an organized division
  • Leadership as characterized by the ability to develop a common vision for diverse constituents, communicate effectively, sell ideas, and take ownership and responsibility for ideas and actions
  • A management style that emphasizes teamwork, communication, collegiality, flexibility, trust, and patience
  • Ability to deal with leaders throughout the University, academic medical center, affiliate organizations, and various external agencies and organizations
  • Personal characteristics, include outstanding verbal communication skills on an individual and group basis, strong writing skills, and an executive demeanor with high emotional intelligence

-       Oversee the clinical care provided by faculty, CRNAs, and trainees in the areas of operative, obstetric, regional, and endoscopic anesthesiology.

-       Oversee the availability and scope of procedural support performed by the Division in other areas of the hospital including the cardiac cath lab, the Emergency Department, and the ICU.

-       Oversee the professional development of faculty, staff, and trainees within the Progress West Hospital Division

-       Support quality improvement within the Progress West Hospital Division, including investment in faculty members' career development

-       Actively promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Progress West Hospital Division

-       Annual evaluation of Progress West Hospital Division faculty

-       With the support of Anesthesiology administrative staff, oversee the administrative success of the clinical practice of the Progress West Hospital Division.

-       Formulate and manage staffing plans for efficient clinical operations at Progress West Hospital

-       Assist with the preparation of annual Progress West Hospital Division budget/financial plan

-       Provide leadership to Progress West Hospital Division program development and growth.

-       As Director of Anesthesiology, serve on the Medical Executive Committee, Quality Review Committee, and Credentials Committee for Progress West Hospital.

-       Support and engage Hospital Leadership in strategic growth for Progress West Hospital.
