Program Director Adult Residency

Primary Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)


  • Design and conduct the program in a fashion consistent with the needs of the community, the mission of the Sponsoring Institution and the Neurology Department.
    • Oversee and ensure the quality of didactic and clinical education in all sites that participate in the program; support education for all learners including fostering positive relationships for neurology residents with undergraduate medical students and postgrad fellows in the department.
    • Approve, and if necessary remove, program faculty members for participation in the residency program education at all sites.
    • Monitor performance and maintain contact with residents while they are on services other than neurology; and monitor resident stress, including physical or emotional conditions which inhibit performance or learning and/or adversely impact resident wellness.
    • Encourage and mentor residents and faculty research activities.
    • Ensure each resident is provided with a documented comprehensive evaluation and an individualized learning plan twice yearly.
    • Remove trainees from supervising interactions and/or learning environments that do not meet the standards of the program.
  • Prepare academic and clinical neurologists to independently practice in the assessment, monitoring, and treatment of neurologic conditions; and to successfully take and pass the Adult Neurology certification exam of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
  • The program director is responsible for ensuring compliance with the ACGME common program and Neurology program requirements.
  • Lead and support resident recruitment and selection, including recruitment of diverse residents from groups underrepresented in medicine.
  • Adhere to relevant board requirements, including but not limited to the Washington University School of Medicine, Affiliated Sites, and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
  • Attend required sponsoring institution meetings and/or ensure representation from your residency leadership team at required meetings via APDs. 
  • Lead, manage and provide purpose and guidance to the Associate Program Directors and Program Coordinator(s) to aid you in achieving the responsibilities and objectives associated with the Program Director role delegating responsibilities as appropriate.
  • In concert with the Department Chair, Vice Chair of Education, GME and Affiliate Site Partners, provide ongoing management of the program structure to accommodate available funding resources and identification of new opportunities for training and funding as appropriate.
  • Lead strategic planning for the program to anticipate practice changes, future workforce needs and needs of our hospital partners.
  • Work to address the existence of systemic biases where we live, work and practice. Actively work with the Department, GME, the University, the Affiliate Sites and the community to diminish the effects of biases in education, healthcare delivery, recruitment in hiring and retention and in healthcare delivery.
  • Establish programs to support the health & wellness of trainees and implement systems to monitor wellbeing and effectively address concerns.

An MD, DO or MD/PhD, board certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN), and having or qualified to obtain an unrestricted license to practice medicine in Missouri are required.  The Program Director will be at the rank of Assistant Professor or above.  Required qualifications also include prior teaching experience in an adult neurology residency or a sub-specialty fellowship; experience in residency and/or fellowship program administration and program development is strongly preferred.
