Director of Laboratory Data Science and Analytics
The Department of Pathology & Immunology and the Division of Laboratory & Genomic Medicine (LGM) at Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM) in St. Louis is inviting applications for a full-time clinical informatics faculty position at the Assistant / Associate Professor level to serve as the Director of Laboratory Data Science and Analytics.
Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly motivated individual who will lead data science and applied analytics within the Division of Laboratory and Genomic Medicine in the department of Pathology and Immunology. The successful candidate will collaborate with basic science and clinical colleagues in Pathology as well as with the broader informatics community at Washington University and BJC Healthcare to help enhance the utilization of data analytics and artificial intelligence to improve population health and wellness and to optimize quality and efficiency in laboratory testing and services. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with experience.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
• Facilitate and direct the development of software/middleware solutions to implement data-driven laboratory medicine
• Lead data strategy and architecture initiatives in support of system-wide operational and research programs
• Develop reciprocal data-sharing infrastructure in coordination with the WUSM Institute for Informatics
• Attend on the Pathology Informatics service, including directing daily rounds and facilitating information system improvements.
• Design and oversee cutting-edge research focused on precision medicine
• Participate in pathology residency and clinical informatics fellowship education
• Additional clinical duties may be considered based on the candidate’s background and interests

The Pathology Informatics Section: The vision of the Section of Pathology Informatics is to lead innovation in the use of clinical information systems, machine learning, and data analytics to generate and account for added value in patient care improvement within the broader mission of the Department of Pathology and Immunology. The Section of Pathology Informatics leads various activities and efforts related to clinical service, laboratory quality improvement initiatives, research, and training. Unique to the Section is a daily rounding service, in which faculty and trainees develop solutions to address the informatics needs of the Department.
The Institute for Informatics (I2): I2 provides a comprehensive home for Biomedical Informatics and Data Science research, education, and services spanning WU, BJC, and affiliated entities. I2 engages faculty, staff, and trainees, as well as external partners, drawn from The School of Medicine as well as the School of Engineering and Applied Science, the Institute for Public Health, the Brown School of Social Work, the Olin School of Business, the Health Systems Innovational Laboratory and Center for Clinical Excellence at BJC HealthCare, and the Cortex Innovation Community. Education and Expectations:
Candidates must possess M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degrees as well as board certification or active candidate status for CP or AP/CP through the American Board of Pathology. The candidate should additionally be either Board-certified or Board-eligible in Clinical Informatics. The ideal candidate will have a record of academic publication in a domain related to biomedical informatics, machine learning, or applied data science. Prior experience in the successful implementation of informatics solutions toward quality improvement in laboratory medicine, as well as familiarity with common data models and data warehouse infrastructure, are highly desirable. The applicant should have excellent interpersonal skills, enthusiasm for teaching, and a collaborative attitude. Development of an extramurally funded research program is highly encouraged and supported.
