Director of Anesthesia- Ambulatory Surgery Center Associate Division Chief of Anesthesiology- BJWCH

The Department of Anesthesiology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis (WUSM) is seeking qualified applications for an exciting and critically important leadership role within one of the fastest growing clinical divisions in the department. The Director of Anesthesia for the Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) in Creve Coeur will lead the opening of this new facility which is under the management of Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital. The center will specialize in ophthalmology and otology procedures with a focus on quality, safety, and efficiency in providing these surgical procedures in a facility that will host four operating rooms, with an average of 40-50 cases per day being performed.

 

The Director of Anesthesia for the ASC will also serve as the Associate Division Chief of Anesthesiology for the West County Division. The West County Division provides anesthesiology services at the Orthopedic Center of Chesterfield and the newest facility in the BJC system, Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital (BJWCH). This facility is a state of the art short-stay surgical hospital with 14 operating rooms, 2 intervential radiology suites and 5 endoscopy rooms. Surgical subspecialities includes Plastics, MIS, ENT, Ortho and Neuro Spine, Urology, Colorectal, Ophthalmology, and Vascular. The facility is both a TJC recognized Bariatric Surgery and Orthopedic Reconstructive Surgery Center of Excellence. Regional anesthesiology services are critically important at both the OC and BJWCH, as orthopedic surgery comprises the majority of surgical case volume in the division.

The West County Division leadership works closely with hospital, nursing and surgery leaders in a variety of collaborative functions which include Strategic Growth Planning, Quality and Safety (Peer Review), Opioid Stewardship, Procedural Sedation, Pharmacy Operations, Critical Care, COVID Operations and Perioperative Efficiency.

 

Professional development responsibilities

 

-       Oversee the professional development of faculty, CRNAs, trainees, and anesthesiology technicians within the West County Division

-       Support clinical operations, safety, and quality improvement within the West County Division, including investment in faculty and CRNA career development.

-       Actively promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the West County Division

-       Annual evaluation of West County Division faculty and CRNAs working at the ASC

 

Administrative responsibilities

 

-       Acquire the necessary familiarity with division clinical operations to support the Division Chief of Anesthesiology, BJWCH.

-       Formulate and update staffing plans for the ASC

-       Assist with the preparation of annual West County Division budget/financial plan

-       Provide leadership to West County Division program development and growth

  • Board Certification in Anesthesiology
  • Broad clinical experience and facile with regional and neuraxial anesthesia.
  • Leadership experience in an ambulatory or community setting is helpful, but not required.
  • Ability to participate in analysis of financial and accounting data and communicate it to faculty, administrators, health care professional and others in lay terms.
  • Demonstrate ability to interact with, relate to, and support the activities of a highly experienced clinical faculty and members of an organized division.
  • A management style that emphasizes teamwork, communication, collegiality, flexibility, trust and patience.
  • Ability to deal with leaders throughout the University, community practice HSOs, private practice surgeons outside WUSM, and other divisions of the Department of Anesthesiology.
  • Personal characteristics, which include outstanding verbal communication skills on an individual and group basis, strong clinical skills, and an executive demeanor with high emotional intelligence.
