Assistant Director of HLA Laboratory
The Department of Pathology & Immunology and the Division of Laboratory and Genomic Medicine (LGM) at Washington University in St. Louis are seeking a clinical pathologist and Assistant Director of Histocompatibility for the HLA laboratory at Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJH), supporting adult and pediatric solid organ and bone marrow transplant programs at the academic medical center.
The LGM is a fast-paced and dynamic division, home to faculty with diverse clinical and research interests, and has a long record of accomplishment in innovation, research, and scholarship. The BJH HLA Laboratory is accredited by both the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI) and the College of American Pathologists (CAP). It is located in a newly constructed facility with a team of dedicated, experienced staff and state-of-the-art instruments for serologic and molecular testing. The laboratory has a high testing volume and supports over 800 transplantations at the medical center annually.
Clinical duties will include participation in medical director oversight of all areas of the HLA lab, including test development and quality programs, technical supervision, and clinical consultation. The successful applicant will interpret and sign out histocompatibility testing results and work closely with the transplant clinicians and other clinical services. Additional responsibilities will include the education of fellows, pathology residents, medical students, and laboratory technologists. The successful applicant will also participate in clinical, translational, or basic science research activities.
The search committee seeks candidates with an M.D. degree or M.D. and Ph.D. degrees, who is eligible for the Clinical Pathology board. Interested individuals should have successfully completed the ASHI-accredited HLA Director Training or be committed to complete the training during the first 2-3 years of employment.
Additional expertise in other laboratory medicine subspecialties, such as transfusion medicine, laboratory hematology, or molecular diagnostics, is preferred. A successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills, enthusiasm for teaching, and a collaborative attitude.
