Director, Center for Reproductive Health Sciences

 

Building on an outstanding foundation, the Director of the Center for Reproductive Health Sciences is charged with developing and implementing an innovative and robust strategic vision for the future of the CRepHS, in alignment with the Washington University (WU) strategic plan and with a special emphasis on enabling scalable innovation. It is expected that the Director will build bridges with a wide, multi-disciplinary range of internal and external stakeholders, and maintain a visible presence throughout the WU community and beyond. In collaboration with WU leaders, the Director will have the ability to recruit and retain diverse, talented junior faculty and postdocs to advance the Center’s portfolio of efforts. The Center’s current research emphasis includes basic biology of reproductive health, multiple approaches to developmental biology with concentrations in cell biology, animal models, and genetics; clinical trials and clinical studies of developmental disorders; studies of healthy human development; developmental endocrinology; neurosciences; translational imaging; medical device development; reproductive cancers, and population health research. This endowed position comes with competitive start-up funds, as well as funding for new strategic initiatives.

 

The Director will fulfill the following duties and responsibilities:

 

  • Forge and nurture strong, proactive and collaborative relationships to advance research, training, and advocacy in women’s health across a broad range of partners within the WU/BJH system, as well as other national and global organizations.
  • Serve as the face of the CRepHS Center both internally and externally.
  • Identify and lead the development of interdisciplinary reproductive health research, education efforts and integrate into other WU departments and centers.
  • Cultivate and lead a competitive research program in reproductive health, including the recruitment of new faculty.
  • Develop, fund and expand opportunities for trainees in reproductive health, including interdisciplinary fellowships and research training for post-docs and junior faculty. Apply the educational resources of WU to expose trainees to reproductive health research and retain and promote those who wish to pursue the field.
  • Cultivate inclusive educational and research culture, with emphasis on engaging students, trainees, and faculty who are underrepresented in science and engaging communities in clinical and overreach activities to overcome health disparities and to achieve health equity.
  • Participate as a member of the senior leadership team and serve on senior level leadership and policy committees.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing and Communication in the Department of Ob/Gyn and within WU and WUSM to create compelling messaging related to reproductive health research with internal and external constituents.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.

 

  • Ph.D. or M.D. scientist with an exemplary record of interdisciplinary investigation related to reproductive health research
  • A visionary leader with an established track record of increasingly prominent leadership roles and developing/growing new initiatives
  • Highly accomplished scientific investigator in basic and/or translational research who has achieved national and international recognition
  • Proven ability to lead interdisciplinary efforts in a medical school or academic medical center setting
  • Experience collaborating with professionals from a diverse range of backgrounds
  • In-depth understanding and knowledge of reproductive health
  • Exceptional public speaking skills, with an ability to communicate complex ideas to both experts and the lay public
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with high integrity; willingness and ability to lead in a consensus-building manner
  • Experience mentoring faculty across disciplines

  • Proven ability to engender trust and influence change; presents in an open-minded, pragmatic, solution-oriented manner with a commitment to mission-driven work
  • A team player who can traverse academic medicine, public agencies and private organizations while building collaborative relationships
  • Proven capacity to partner and effectively collaborate with other leaders
  • Understanding and knowledge of multiple disciplines: biology, clinical  practice, engineering
  • Ability to move from issues requiring vision and strategy to those that require problem solving; action-oriented
  • Ability to enhance project and grant collaborations between clinical faculty and CRepHS faculty
