Chief, Pain Management Division

The Washington University Department of Anesthesiology is seeking qualified applications for an exciting and critically important leadership role within one of the country’s preeminent academic anesthesiology departments at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. The Chief of the Pain Management Division will lead the broad clinical and educational responsibilities of the Pain Management Division, serve as the Clinical Section Chief of the Washington University Pain Center, and also operate as the Director of the Pain Management Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

The Pain Management Division is the clinical arm of the Washington University Pain Center, which has the mission to alleviate human suffering from pain through integration of basic and clinical pain research, clinical pain management practice, and pain education.  It will be the responsibility of the Section Chief of Clinical Pain Management Practice of the Pain Center to represent clinical practice within the Pain Center and coordinate clinical practice activities with other Pain Center activities.

The principal activities of the Pain Management Division to be overseen by the Division Chief include pain management clinical practice, pain management educational programs, and personnel management of faculty, staff, and trainees within the Pain Management Division. 

 

The pain management clinical practice includes:

- Three Pain Management Centers (PMC)
Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJH), directed by the Pain Management Division Chief
- Outpatient pain management clinical practice
- Inpatient chronic/cancer pain consult service
- Acute Pain Service (oversee the leadership of the BJH Acute Pain Service Director)
 Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital (BJWCH), oversee the leadership of the medical director BJWCH PMC for both outpatient and inpatient clinical practices
Missouri Baptist Medical Center (MBMC), oversee the leadership of the medical director MBMC PMC for both outpatient and inpatient clinical practices
 
Professional development responsibilities
- Oversee the professional development of faculty, staff, and trainees within the Pain Management Division
- Support research and quality improvement within the Pain Management Division, including investment in faculty members’ academic career development
- Actively promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Pain Management Division
- Annual evaluation of Pain Management Division faculty
 
Administrative responsibilities
With the support of Anesthesiology administrative staff, oversee the administrative success of the clinical practice and educational programs within the Pain Management Division.
- Formulate and updating staffing plans for the Pain Division clinical operations
- Assist with the preparation of annual Pain Division budget/financial plan
- Provide leadership to Pain Division program development and growth

  • Board Certification in Pain Medicine and appropriate primary board certification.
  • Broad clinical experience in multidisciplinary pain management.
  • Experience in pain education leadership.
  • Leadership experience in an academic department, teaching hospital.
  • Ability to participate in analysis of financial and accounting data and communicate it to faculty, administrators, health care professionals and others in lay terms.
  • Ability to oversee the delivery of pain management services, which enhance revenue, operate efficiently and effectively, and are friendly to clinical and administrative staff and patients.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with, relate to, and support the activities of a superb faculty as individuals and members of an organized division.
  • Leadership as characterized by the ability to develop a common vision for diverse constituents, communicate effectively, sell ideas, and take ownership and responsibility for ideas and actions.
  • A management style that emphasizes teamwork, communication, collegiality, flexibility, trust and patience.
  • Ability to deal with leaders throughout the University, academic medical center, affiliate organizations, and various external agencies and organizations.
  • Personal characteristics, which include outstanding verbal communication skills on an individual and group basis, strong writing skills, and an executive demeanor with high emotional intelligence.
