The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis is seeking an Adult Cardiothoracic Surgeon to be the Director of Heart Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support at the Associate Professor level.  

 

While the primary focus of this position will be clinical adult cardiac surgery, candidates must have a strong commitment and demonstrable history of providing for the education of cardiac and general surgery residents.  The ideal candidate will be an excellent clinician with a strong interest in developing a translational or clinical research program. 

 

As part of Washington University Medical Center, one of the nation’s largest clinical and biomedical research facilities, the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery is one of the largest, most experienced, cardiothoracic practices in the country.  The faculty includes 21 cardiothoracic surgeons and 4 laboratory-based investigators.  Founded in 1929, the division performed over 6,800 cardiothoracic surgical procedures in 2020. During this last year, we performed 46 heart transplants and implanted 250 short and long-term mechanical assist devices. We are dedicated to providing the highest quality, innovative care for our patients, performing world-class research into challenging clinical problems, and stimulating educational opportunities for fellows.  

 

The division is primarily housed on the campus of Barnes Jewish Hospital including 7 dedicated cardiothoracic surgery operating rooms, a 27-bed Cardiothoracic ICU and a 6-bed LVAD ICU.  Barnes-Jewish Hospital is part of BJC HealthCare, which is amongst the largest academically linked health systems in the country having 15 hospitals, 3,026 staffed beds with more than 131,000 admissions in 2020.  Our faculty also provides adult cardiac surgical services at the Cochran VA Hospital in Saint Louis, and Christian Hospital Northeast, a 233 bed community hospital 11 miles from campus.

The successful candidate will need to be board certified and have completed an ACGME cardiothoracic surgery residency program. The candidate will need a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in heart transplantation and, mechanical circulatory support with proven leadership skills.
