Instructor, Department of Neurology, Research Faculty (Full-Time), Bateman Lab and Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer Network Trials Unit (DIAN-TU Biomarker Core)
The Bateman Laboratory in the Department of Neurology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, in collaboration with the Dominantly Inherited Alzheimer Network Trials Unit (DIAN-TU) is seeking an exceptional PhD, MD, or MD/PhD faculty candidate with experience in neurodegenerative diseases and biomarker assay development. The Bateman laboratory develops and utilizes a wide variety of assays and techniques from basic applications, such as quantitative measurement of stable-isotope labeled peptides to clinical translational studies in diagnostic and therapeutic biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease.
The position is for a research track faculty appointment at a rank commensurate with academic experience and qualifications. The successful candidate with split time approximately 70/30 between the two primary roles.
Approximately seventy percent of effort will be focused on leading NIH, foundation, and industry sponsored studies in the Bateman Laboratory, leading projects primarily focused on quantifying and characterizing of Neurofilament isoforms in patients with Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases.
Approximately thirty percent of effort will be devoted to the Biomarker Core of the DIAN and DIAN-TU, an advanced worldwide adaptive trial platform that tests therapeutics targeting the pathophysiology of Alzheimer’s disease with the goal to slow, stop or reverse Alzheimer’s disease. The candidate will provide scientific and project managerial oversight for large scale, multi-modal research projects investigating fluid biomarkers in Alzheimer disease.
Successful candidates should have wet lab experience and also be familiar with and/or have experience in clinical trial operations. Expertise with mass spectrometry and neurodegenerative diseases is highly desired. Candidates should also have leadership experience including project management, personnel supervision, task delegation, decision making, conflict resolution, and effective communication, preferably in the context of multi-disciplinary/multi-functional research teams. Experience working in culturally diverse environments is highly preferred, and successful candidates should possess competencies and demonstrated expertise in multi-cultural settings. Otherresponsibilities will center on data analyses and interpretation. This position will work closely with the DIAN-OBS and DIAN-TU biostatisticians and the scientific team to examine cross-sectional and longitudinal hypotheses relating fluid biomarker results to imaging, other fluid biomarkers, clinical/cognitive measures, and drug effect for the DIAN OBS study and DIAN-TU trials.The candidate will work closely with Randall Bateman, MD, and the Fluid Biomarker Core Leader (Anne Fagan, PhD) and the Associate Core Leader, Suzanne Schindler, MD, PhD, in writing/reviewing grants, progress reports and manuscripts, creating budgets, giving presentations, providing training and carrying out other potential duties required for the successful operation of the Core.
