Internal Medicine Residency Clinic Medical Director

The Internal Medicine residency at Washington University/Barnes Jewish Hospital is seeking an outstanding primary care clinician, teacher and leader for the position of Internal Medicine Residency Clinic Medical Director. The Medical Director will oversee the clinical operations for a large resident clinic, in a program with 175 residents. The clinic occupies 16,000 square feet, with 40 examination rooms, and is supported by social work, pharmacists, nutritionists, diabetic educators, and other resources for a rich educational experience for residents. The clinic also hosts 3rd and 4th year medical students from the Washington University School of Medicine and students from the St Louis College of Pharmacy. The Medical Director is supported by a Clinic Manager, Assistant Manager, Chief Resident and direct staff support. The Department of Medicine and Division of Medical Education oversees the residency and are committed to outstanding ambulatory training, primary care and the career development of academic internists.

Clinical and Resident Administration: Administrative duties will take 50% of the Medical Director’s time. Activities will include: participating in strategic and operational planning for the Primary Care Medicine Clinic; participation in monitoring and evaluating residents and faculty in clinic; developing, implementing, and evaluating clinic patient safety and quality improvement activities including issues of efficiency, panel management and continuity; facilitating monthly clinic meetings; reviewing and responding to patient complaints; assessing and improving patient and learner experience through collaboration with clinic and residency leadership; participating in recruitment and selection of clinic attendings and ambulatory chief resident; developing and monitoring clinic performance metrics in conjunction with Barnes Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine Department of Medicine; evaluating clinic financial data; reviewing and coordinating resident and attending staffing models in clinic; working with Epic leadership to optimize EMR use in clinic; participating in clinic didactics and non-clinical ambulatory teaching.

Clinical: Clinical duties will take 50% of the Medical Director’s time. Clinical time should primarily focus on precepting Internal Medicine Residents in the Primary Care Medicine Clinic at the Center for Outpatient Health. Based on additional interests and experience, appointment as an Associate Program Director will be considered.

  • Experience in Internal Medicine residency outpatient clinics
  • Leadership experience in an academic setting
  • Excellent organizational, collaborative and communication skills
  • Experience and qualifications commensurate with appointment at the experienced assistant professor level or higher
  • ABIM certification in Internal Medicine

  • Prior experience in clinical operations, quality and safety work
  • Prior experience with management of faculty or staff
  • Experience with change management
