Bioethics Research Faculty Opportunity Instructor or Assistant Professor Level

Washington University School of Medicine’s (WUSM) Division of General Medical Sciences (GMS) is seeking an individual who will engage in empirical research on ethical and social issues related to health care and human subjects research. This person would support the research and scholarly activities of the Center for Clinical and Research Ethics and the Professional and Social Issues Lab (PSI Lab) of James DuBois, Alison Antes, and Jessica Mozersky. The PSI Lab conducts research on issues that affect: 

  • patients and family members (such as Alzheimer’s Disease, organ transplantation, and mental health services);
  • researchers (such as lab leadership, data sharing, and training programs); and
  • physicians (such as when to return incidental findings from genetic tests or imaging, how best to obtain informed consent, and how to manage moral distress).

Current areas of special interest include ethical issues in organ transplantation and regenerative medicine.

WUSM provides an exciting research environment with numerous collaborative opportunities. The position also affords the opportunity to deliver lectures to medical students, residents, and research trainees within the Clinical Research Training Center of the WUSM Institute for Clinical and Translational Science.

Efforts to secure long-term research funding through career development awards or independent investigator applications will be supported by mentors in the PSI Lab and GMS.

The position requires an individual with excellent skills in writing and conducting empirical social science research (e.g., social science experimental design or qualitative data analysis), and an established interest in bioethics or research ethics. PhD (or equivalent) required at time of appointment. Fields of particular interest include social, industrial-organizational, or cognitive psychology, medical anthropology, and sociology. Individuals with a PhD in bioethics, extensive publications, and an intense desire to master social science methods may also be considered.
