Anesthesiology Faculty Positions

The Division of General Anesthesiology within the Department of Anesthesiology at Washington University in St. Louis and Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJH) is recruiting faculty at the Instructor/Assistant/Associate/Full Professor level. The Department of Anesthesiology has ranked in the top five in NIH funding for over 10 years and is committed to advancing the specialty of anesthesiology and improving patient outcomes through meaningful discovery.

The Division of General Anesthesiology consists of ~30 primary and 15 secondary faculty members, 100 CRNAs, and 10 administrators. The Division is responsible for perioperative anesthetic care of the following adult surgical specialties: neuro, otolaryngology, oromaxillofacial, gynecology, urology, surgical oncology, general surgery, orthopedics, trauma, plastics, transplant, vascular. In addition, the Division provides services for out of the OR (remote) anesthesia in diagnostic and interventional radiology, psychiatry (ECT), gastroenterology, and reproductive services (IVF). The Division covers the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and provides in-hospital airway code service and 24/7 coverage for emergent and urgent cases. These services amount to ~40,000 cases per year, performed in 40 operating rooms and ~15 remote anesthetizing locations each day.

The General Anesthesiology Division is committed to resident and fellow education. Residents (CA1- CA3) on our service manage increasingly complex clinical scenarios with emphasis on challenging hemodynamic and hemostatic problems. For the past 3 years, the Outstanding Teacher Award has been bestowed by residents on a member of our Division. The Division hosts three advanced clinical fellowships in Neuro, Abdominal Organ Transplant and Trauma anesthesia. The Neuroanesthesia fellowship provides exposure to all types of neurosurgical procedures including craniotomies performed with intraoperative MRI and awake, complex cerebrovascular and spinal procedures, MRI-guided laser ablation of tumors, stereotactic and functional neurosurgery, and interventional neuroradiology, for a total of ~2,500 neurosurgical cases per year performed in 6 dedicated operating rooms and a state-of-the art interventional radiology suite. The Abdominal Organ Transplant Anesthesia fellowship provides exposure to liver (~100/year), kidney (~220/year) and pancreatic (~15/year) transplants, hepatic resections (~100/year) and Whipple procedures (~120/year). In addition, the fellows are exposed to major vascular and endovascular cases. The fellows attend a structured lecture series, interdisciplinary meetings with the remainder of the transplant team (surgeons, hepatologists) and are trained in transesophageal echocardiography. The Trauma Anesthesia fellowship hinges on BJH’s status as the main level-1 trauma center in the metropolitan St. Louis area. Exposure is broad to penetrating and blunt trauma as well as ortho trauma, with the latter accounting for ~1,500 cases/year. This fellowship consists of 8 months of OR anesthesia with the trauma service, focusing on patient care and management of the OR case flow. The 4 months of elective rotations includes 2 months of ICU (SICU/Neuro ICU), trauma radiology, ultrasound for the trauma anesthesiologist, advanced regional anesthesia for extremity trauma, and blood bank/transfusion medicine. Fellows in all 3 specialties also act in a supervisory role with residents and are appointed to the faculty at the Instructor level.

The Division is embarking on an exciting growth phase, with the opening of a newly constructed 12-OR suite, expansion of its remote anesthesia services, and further development of its existing programs in hepatobiliary, transplant, vascular, orthopedic and neuro anesthesiology. Faculty are sought with expertise in these specific areas, but also in any other general anesthesiology specialty. The ideal candidate is intellectually curious, clinically skilled, able to work congenially with peers and motivated to continually better themselves.  The leadership of the Division is committed to creating an environment that fosters academic achievement in its many facets and rewards clinical and educational efforts. Leadership development and other personal advancement initiatives will be encouraged and supported. The ambition of the General Anesthesiology Division is to lead in ways to improve both short- and long-term outcomes following surgery.
