Director of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology
This is a crucial leadership position within the Division and the Department, as well as an exciting career opportunity for an energetic and enthusiastic individual. The Director will oversee the clinical, educational and research aspects of neuroanesthesia within the Division. S/he will work closely with the Chief of Anesthesiology to propel the neuroanesthesia fellowship forward, enhance the educational experience of residents on the rotation, develop new clinical protocols and foster research productivity. As such, the successful applicant for this position will have the opportunity to recruit new members to the neuroanesthesia team and promote broad and impactful multidisciplinary partnerships with other members of the team including neurosurgeons, interventional neuroradiologists, neurologists and neurointensivists. The Division is committed to strengthening and expanding ongoing research collaborations between neuroanesthesia faculty and other team members. Examples of resources available to achieve the goals of this position include seed research funding allocated through a competitive mechanism by both Barnes Jewish Hospital and the Department, a robust clinical and basic research infrastructure, an anesthesia-run simulation center, and logistical and administrative support. Leadership development and other personal advancement initiatives will be encouraged and supported. The Division provides perioperative anesthesia care for asleep and awake craniotomies (~700/year), cerebrovascular cases and carotid endarterectomies (~150/year), complex spine operations (>1,000/year), MRI-guided laser ablation of tumors and stereotactic and functional neurosurgical procedures. Washington University has the only surgical program for movement disorders in Missouri, a level 4 certified epilepsy center of excellence, a center specialized in the treatment of Moyamoya disease, and oversees one of the largest brain tumor clinical trial programs in the U.S. Neurosurgical procedures are performed in 6 dedicated operating rooms, two of which are equipped with intraoperative MRI. In addition, a state-of-the art interventional radiology suite has just been completed.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced neuroanesthesiologist with demonstrated achievements in clinical, educational and/or research innovation. Both domestic and international candidates are encouraged to apply.
