GIM Career Development Position

This unique ambulatory-based, scholarly one-year position unites the teaching opportunities of an academic practice with a robust clinical practice. This program is designed to broaden understanding of direct clinical care, facilitate teaching opportunities, and allow for leadership development for those seeking to pursue roles in community or academic medicine. The year offers a unique blend of mentored education and patient care. Based on the individual's interests and future goals, the program adjusts its focus with options for emphasis in an academic pathway (teaching outpatient medicine in a clinical context) or community pathway (developing skills necessary for a career in direct patient care).

Program Mission: Create an early career launching pad for first year faculty in academic ambulatory medicine.

Program Goals: 
1) Clinical skills: broaden and refine outpatient skills

2) Teaching: develop teaching skills over a range of learners (medical students, residents, and peers) and venues (e.g., precepting, chalk talks, formal didactic teaching, Grand Rounds, etc.)
3) Tracks to focus on: Clinical Skills/Teaching/Leadership

Clinical Skills: 
-Provide direct patient care as part of the WU Complete Care Clinic (the faculty practice of General Medicine)
-Precept residents in the Continuity Clinic and Acute Care at the Center for Outpatient Health

Teaching: 
-Optional Educational Activities: Lead journal club or resident report/present as part of the Ambulatory Didactic Series/Student didactic teaching or small group facilitation

Scholarship Track: Acceptance into the Foundations in Teaching Skills Program: 

  • Instruction in foundational teaching skills
  • Beginning the process of producing an educator portfolio
  • One-on-one mentorship
  • Direct feedback on teaching skills
  • Option to present at Internal Medicine Grand Rounds 


Leadership Track:

  • One-on-one mentorship with division leadership
  • Participation in division clinical administration as assistant medical director of faculty clinic
  • Development of clinical improvement project and implementation


SUMMARY
This is a clinically active position with patient care and direct teaching responsibilities as well as opportunities for development of teaching or leadership skills. The unique features of this role are:

  • Focused pathways based on the individual's career interests
  • Development of ambulatory care skills (direct care settings and precepting learners at various levels)
  • Protected time for mentorship and scholarship

 

 

  • Missouri Medical License
  • Missouri Controlled Substance Registration (BNDD)
  • Federal DEA
  • Board Certification or Eligible
